Title: Thunder-Bolt Flying Movies
Post by: RC Storick on August 06, 2006, 09:18:13 PM: Today we went to Budder park. Steve captured some movies. The first one is of Ted Winterman and I will get one up ASAP of the Tbolt. The files are large 15 MEG.

It is the first flight of the day and the RWO is horrendous!! I must admit this is not my plane of choice nowadays. I prefer to fly the lighter S6B However I will be attending Allen's contest so I have to get re-acquainted with this plane because I will not fly the Super Marine off grass.

Another 25 gallons and I will be back to where I was 12 years ago. The nice thing about this video is I can see where I still need some work. It was my first flight of the day. Listen to that PA.75 Humm sounds great to me anyway!

Post by: RC Storick on August 07, 2006, 07:04:27 AM: Steve is my camera man and coach. As soon as he figures out rendering with higher quality, I am going to try to talk him into construction clips. Just remember guys this stuff takes an extreme amount of time. The 7 minute video you see took probably an hour to make on the computer and to get it up loaded onto the site and it is only 7 minutes long. So if we end up doing a video on the next airplane (T-BOLT Razorback) I will put the first 5 minutes on the web the rest will go on a CD for sale (cheap).

I don't know if it is an optical illusion, but the bottoms seemed a little high in the beginning half, then you calmed down.. I don't think I'm quiet qualified to judge, however!! Considering 12 years away, I'd say it was quiet good!

Line length is 69' 11" center of handle to center of airplane. I have not forgot how to do this I just am still a little rusty. But next year I should be in the groove. Also I might add that was the first flight of the week. No Warm ups. I do bear down under pressure on the RO. Also when flying my S6B the corners are sharper as it is lighter by a whole lot! I also use a wider spaced handle on the Super Marine as it is more nose heavy and tends to track better. The PA .65 in the nose of that was indeed an improvement from my worn out .61 but the next S6B will have the .75. And still be 57 OZ.

At my experience level Im certainly not one to judge the execution of maneuvers. However, I think the use of the camera is a great idea. It would be even better if the camera were a little closer, or the resolution was a bit better. It would also be a good idea to place the camers as the judge would sit. Then you can reference flights as he would see. The camera would also be a great assistance and record for triming the plane. I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know and would think that many of the upper levels film flights to show where they need to make control input adjustments to perfect maneuvers.

As a beginner, if I could better see your hand movement as the maneuver is executed (seeing both plane and hand) it would be an awesome training tool. The next best thing to being there.

Thanks for the film, I enjoyed it and hope the T-Bolt is everything you hoped for and wanted it to be.

From a photographic viewpoint, I think the video would be improved by adding a wide angle adaptor(aux lens) to the video camera lens. This would allow you to move the camera closer to the circle and get better detail, possibly getting the entire hemisphere in the frame, depending on camera angle. It would be nice to get greater detail. Depending on the camera, Adorama, B&H Photo and a host of others carry a aftermarket fish-eye or WA adaptors that'll screw/ clip onto you existing lens. If you have a pro grade camera, the manufacturer can recommend a wide angle lens specifically for it.

The big thing about using videos as aids in improving your pattern is that you should get an air-breather that can critique and have them "grade" your improvements....relying strictly on video has been a hinderence to several pretty good flyers....mix'em up.

Not too bad for a first flight in a while. There are some places that need work, but you can't lay off as long as you did without loosing some of the skills needed to fly a great looking pattern. Just compare that flight to Billy's winning flight at the WC's and I beleive that you will find plenty to work on. I know that I have plenty to work on as well, having only flown about 10 flights total in the last 4 years!

I will post a better flight this weekend. That flight was the first of the day,my best is usually my 3rd. I am not making excuses just showing that I still can fly as well as build.

The best thing that came out of this video was a member sent me an email telling me the plane was pushing (I agree) and needs less flap. I will try that this weekend.

You continually consider and solicit every other members wants in a forum. At the same time, you have taught many the aspects of building and flying. Hey Bob,
Looked pretty good.

The engine seems to run just a hair faster inverted, but cleans up and hauls butt through all outsides. I would think a tank shim downward would help. I chased this on my 61 for a while before finding a good spot.

Does the model balance nose heavy? I sense a too smooth corner and a too healthy pull, but that is an impression from the tape which wasn't too claer on my computer.

The sizes of the maneuvers looked good. The intersections were "X'ed" on the round horizontals and crossed over on the squares, but I know that timing has a lot to do with that and with practice that will work itself out. The second intersection on each vertical you pulled down too early, but again, timing.

I'll give a call next time I'm in town.

Regarding your pattern, the 3rd (round) outside was a bit bigger than the first two, and the recovery half loop was smaller than the first two. In theory, it's not part of the three loops, but the impression given isn't good. Corners a bit soft, as you already said. I thought the triangles were a little flat, meaning too wide or not tall enough, but position wasn't great for the camera. Landing was, uh...not your best! But you knew that, already. Was that the pavement, or PE? Changing from one plane to another is very difficult.

I'd ask the video dude to shoot my 3rd flight, not #1. You probably know what errors you make getting used to the different model, so show us the best flight you can do! I've come to the conclusion that body/foot position makes a huge difference, so if you can get your camera guy to show what you're doing with your feet, that'd help, IMO.

I must say that the video was as good as I've ever seen, which is not a lot, but those were sold for $. Many of the models just disappeared during the tricks on those videos, while yours showed up quite well. Panning is a bad idea! The perspective is a little goofy here & there, due to not being exactly upwind, and you can bet that a wide angle lens would make it far worse. I think I'd back the camera up 10' and put some marker poles downwind, maybe 3, about 30' apart. I'd put markers for his tripod at 180 from the poles, then just point at the pole you'll do the trick at. He can stop the camera, move the tripod and be back in action for the next trick (no score to write down!).

It sure would help the judges, if contestants would do that more often. I don't mind moving, but I'd like to know that I'm moving to where the pilot would like me to be, rather than going where I feel might possibly be the right place. It's a good distance from the judge to the plane, so the wind could be a lot different. The pilot should be making that call, not the judge. After reviewing other website's videos with "Experts", I still maintain the opinion mentioned at the top of this thread! Thats pretty darn good for #1 warm-up. Keep it up, as I am going to do as well , and things will be just fine!! Just have fun and don't stress out!
