If you want to join two threaded 4-40 rods, would a coupling nut work OK or is there a better fastener for this?

Hi Mike,

Bill Byles (IIRC

) used to make a coupler that sounds similar to what you are asking for.

If not, just have Jim Lee make what you want!

Mike, I ave one of the coupler's that Bill Byles makes, send me your mailing address and I'll send it to you.
In actuality it is a "turnbuckle".

Du Bro and Hangar 9 make 4/40 turnbuckles too. They ahve two male rods though.

Don't turnbuckles have one left-hand thread and one right-hand thread? Looks like Mike wants to joint two rods both of which have right-hand threads. That's legal now in Washington, by the way.

Thats correct, one left hand thread and one right hand thread. Turnbuckles. They have flats in the middle and the DuBro ones you can buy with wrench. Threaded male rods on both ends.
The Hangar 9 ones are Titanium. I guess I thought Mike was looking for a turnbuckle. Sorry.

Dubro does make a rod coupler that has a female thread and a male thread. Here is a coupling nut:

Be careful with the threaded couplers and rods; I have had two of the H9 titanium parts break during normal CLPA use.

What I am looking for is a coupling nut (female both ends) with a Right hand thread at one end and a Left hand thread at the other in a size 4-40. You could put a rod with right hand threads in each end and tighten both at the same time

That's not how I remember threads working! You can't screw a RH threaded rod end into a LH threaded nut.

I'm wondering what you're trying to accomplish? It sounds like you just need a longer CF pushrod tube? If you want to adjust your pushrod length, a turnbuckle sort of fitting is required (see Bill Byles), tho I'd rather just turn the rod end and bolt it back onto the elevator horn. A turnbuckle has a RH male and a RH female, as well as a LH male and a LH female thread.

Steve it was something I was trying to do on a take apart profile with no flaps. I wanted to be able to disconnect the pushrod at the trailing edge of the wing so once you removed the wing you would not have a long pushrod waving around. There is probably a better way to do it but I am just blank on how. Thanks for trying to help.

Ahhhh....yes, that helps. A coupler such as from McMaster-Carr would do the job just fine, with one half Locktited, CA'd, or epoxied permanently onto either pushrod. No LH threads needed! If you go to any hardware store, you'll find coupler nuts and "Redi-Rod" (aka "All Thread"), that will give you the idea of what you're getting into. It would be much slicker to have an internal threaded insert in the end of one pushrod or the other. I'd for sure check at Central Hobby in Montana and see if they have the parts already.

Trying to think of another way to do it...I guess you could put a false flap horn ("Idler Arm") at the TE and unhook from that?
