Guys
I don't have a rule book and can not find the info on line so asking here.
(well I do have the 1974-75 rule book)
What are the requirements for thong?
Material and size?
Heavy shoe lace???
Part of pull test?
If so how to equal pull on lines during test.
Good source of lines or wire to make?
Stranded .015s
Currently flying on .018x 60.
Going to .015 should help---and go to 70ft?
Once I solve these 2 glitches its on to learning the pattern.
Practice site was dust bowl now mud hole.
Looks like this weekend it will be dry and ready for me to scare the ground with low pull outs from wing overs!!!
Will try not to make any tooth pics!
Thanks
David

A good source of flying lines is Brodak Mfg.
As for the safety thong I buy 1/8 inch dia. nylon rope. It will pass any pull test that is required.

The safety thong can be made of anything that passes the pull test. I would recommend braided nylon bootstrings - they seem to be more durable than just about anything else. The thong is pull-test separately from the lines, but to the same level of stress as the lines. You hook the thong up to the pull test machine and pull on the handle, not the airplane.
As far as lines go, i get mine from MBS Model supply on 1000 ft reels. The minimum diameter is set by the weight of the airplane, per the table in the rule book. Most of the time you probably want the smallest diameter, but not necessarily - I would be afraid to fly a 63 oz 61-sized piped plane on .015 in any sort of wind even thought it's legal, and sometimes the performance is better with larger-than-minimum lines because they stretch less. The length can be anything from 26 feet to 70 (center of airplane to handle, not actually the line length). What you want it to be depends on the airplane, the power, and a lot of factors. I experiment with line lengths in 1 foot increments with new airplanes, and 1 foot can make a huge difference in the performance. You don't menytion the airplane and engines, but a typical 35-sized stunt trainer with a 25LA, 25FP, 20FP, Veco 19, etc, I would start with .015x60-62 (eyelet to eyelet) and experiment. Same airplane with a Fox 35, McCoy, etc, maybe .015x56-58. For a 40-60-sized piped airplane I would suggest .018x64.

For some reason this computer will not do PDF!
I loves to tell Microsoft about the problem but Microsoft never sends a solution--for 7 years now!!
Can someone copy past to word or something and post or pm it?
That would be great.
Jim
That was my thoughts while typing it.
Now the wife wants a safety thong! LL~
Wonder how she will look with the nylon rope--1/8in at that!
So Brodack and nylon rope is the cure.
What about the pull test?
just slide rope to center of handle??
Thanks guys!

A heavy shoelace works fine. I use a lanyard from an ID badge. The thong gets pull tested separately. One holds the handle, and the pull test guy or machine pulls on the other end of the thong.
Everybody I know gets their lines from http://www.mbsmodelsupply.com/ . Melvin brings his stuff to the Nats. I stock up once a year.

For thong material, I buy this very soft nylon rope material (sabout 1/8") from Home Depot. Its in their department with the bungee cords and tie down/ come-along type materials. You get a bag full of about 50',or more, for about 3.00,and enough to last a lifetime...

Ah
Thanks Brett
That makes sense on thong pull test--I see it now.
Airplanes are all .35
Air or King Cobra Midwest with a McCoy almost 40 years old and looks every bit of it.
The 2 shoestrings one OS .35 the other a fox at 31 and 26 oz
20 year old smoothie fox at 42oz
Recent Chipmunk at 44oz ST.35stunt modified.
And(i need a drum roll here) a Midwest p-40 profile at 69oz! LL~
It stays on the wall.
The cobra should be a winner in profile as it will scare all others out of the sky! LL~
So it looks like I have plenty of tooth pick making equipment ready.
Hope it does not come to that!!
Thanks

Well I use a Mac and have no issues. Also have Acrobat on several PC's at work, also with no issues. Those are running W2000 (1) and XP (2). I have no clue how you can put up with not being able to read pdf--most documentation on the web is in pdf.
AFAIK, there isn't much that will convert pdf to MS Word.
Anyway welcome back to CL! :)

The silly thing flies fairly good
Get very walery if you try a square corner and even then its large and round.
Its a very nice airplane with an experiment gone wrong paint job.
One day sanding and monokote should help it out.
Richard
She says it tickles and is not going to do a very good job of keeping the castor oil off her while launching airplanes!
My opinion of the situation is #^ n~ #^ n~ #^
Good night guys and thanks for all the help!
