This year's model.......it's finished!!
« on: April 29, 2012, 08:09:07 PM »
I put the finishing touches on this year's model about 30 minutes ago.
This time it's called the Furias 96S; S for Sidewinder due to the side mounted
engine. Kudos to Brad Walker for the name suggestion. This Furias 96 has
a built up wing and a side mounted Discovery Retro 60 engine. The scoops
are carbon fiber, molded from Sig 9" canopies. The wingtips are also carbon
fiber, molded from Sig 8" canopies. It weighs in at 64 oz., including tip weight.
There's a pic of the Jake Moon designed carbon fiber exhaust deflector also.

Nice work Steve.

Is that a record for a model with the most Canopies on a plane?

5 ?

Steve.

Ship has a sweet " Racer Look" about it.  The Cheek cowls add so much.  Are the Cheeks Cowls available separately somewhere?

Should look really nice in the air.

  Dave.

Nice looking model, Steve. Love the side mount and cheek cowls. CF exhaust wrapper sheet is a nice touch.

Yeah...

Where are the Vortex Generators and Moonbuilt mods ?

Canopies are only good for so long..

What would have been cool - Wheel pants molded from 2 x 1/2 Sig Canopies.. Could have got the tally up to 9 !!!!'

Steve - I like that alteast the canopy is on the right way - hey derek..  >:D

Looks killer Steve! I bet it pained you to put lead in that outboard carbon tip! LOL!

Kidding aside, I'd be curious to know how much weight you may have saved on the inboard tip, so as to not need as much on the outboard.

Looking forward to flight reports.

Can't wait to see it in Muncie!

The carbon wingtips weighed in at 10 grams and 11 grams. The super heavy 11g
tip is on the outboard. I put 1 oz. of tip weight to start with, but it's not actually
in the tip itself. The tip weight box is up against the last outboard rib. No way I was
going to cut into those tips.

So, the airfoil is also from a SIG 8" canopy?   ???

Almost!! Believe it or not, I put the 9" canopy on top of the root tip drawing
on the plans, and it was almost a perfect match. Wow, I keep doing all this
work to come up with airfoils for planes, turns out a canopy could do the trick.
Doooohhhhhhhhh!!

Doug and I made it to the flying field this afternoon and I was able to get two flights
on the new plane. On the first flight one of the wheels came off right after takeoff.
Arrgggghhhh! Made for a nerve wracking flight, but I was able to land safely with no
incident and just a small scrape on the bottom of the gear skirt.

The plane flew level, no hunting, and the wing was level also. So, that was the good.
It has a really nice, hard corner but doesn't seem to bounce or hop on exit. I like that.
Now, I just have to fiddle with tank height, needle settings, etc to find the sweet spot.

Real Nice Indeed.

I also would like to make my next model with a side mount engine. If you have pictures showing how you built the nose would be very helpful.
