I'd probably pick it up, but I wouldn't bother with all the fancy folding.  Just wad it up, ring the doorbell  and hand it to the owner.  (It doesn't hurt the flag to wad it up)

Larry I am also ex military and I would have folded it the same way.  It is a sign of respect and courtesy to do it the RIGHT way.  This actually put a lump in my throat.

Thanks for posting that Mike. It's heart warming and reassuring. It reminds me of the young active duty athlete at the Olympics who stopped running when he heard the National Anthem.

I am also a military veteran.  I respect my flag, but I'm also a practical person.  It isn't necessary to perform a flag ritual just to return it to its owner.
