Title: This Month's MA
Post by: peabody on April 30, 2012, 05:52:26 AM
I know that there are a bunch of folk that think MA is useless, but I found the current issue to be real good......
Several snippets in various articles were worthwhile, but Bob Hunt's article on using auto paints was terrific! Very concise and to the point!

Thanks to Bob!  And MA!

Have fun!

I interpret the dropping of certain FAI events because of lack of interest as a good way to save money and time...
Have fun!

Meaning lack of interest by the 90% or so that are just sport R/C fliers. The thing is, that those guys are in & out of the hobby in a short period...I'd guess 50% of that 90% are onto something else in 4 years. I'd like to see some stats on that. Should those guys control the AMA and affect the fun of guys that have been doing this stuff (including R/C) at the highest levels for most of their life? I don't think so. How much does the AMA kick in to support any of the teams? I think they pay the entry fees and minimal room & board, but not much else. Other countries do even less, but I don't see that having anything to do with what we do.

Reminds me, is that clod Sandy Pimenoff still a boss in the FAI? IMO, he is one useless waste of skin.  D>K

Too bad Bob won't see this. Someone slammed him a few months ago and he told me he will not waste his time here anymore. Our loss.

In reference to those opinions above, I will add mine.

1. The new "Model Aviation" is definitely a superior magazine. In that regard why is it not a profit making "Unrelated Business" as it was so intended to be back around 1977 when the mag. went commercial.  Why does the membership have to support a commercial magazine within the realm of an Internal Revenue Code 501 (c) (3)? If Fly RC, MAN, FM, etc. had such an opportunity they too would be much much more informative to the readers. Unfortunately, MA under the "unrelated business" status of a tax exempt organization has YOU to pay the bills.

Don't believe it! Go read the annual audits. If you can read a very basic Financial Audit Report, it's all there in black and white.
https://www.modelaircraft.org/files/10financialstatement.pdf

Model Aviation costs YOU, an AMA member, twice or close to it, what the Public Liability Insurance program costs you. It darn well should be great! It has twice the staff working on it as there is working for membership.

As far as the FAI Programs, I don't care about FAI for myself, however if I had my way, FAI would be a top priority. Team members would be 100% First Class supported and all the News Medias would receive reports on how well they did. I stand strong for United States FIRST!
AMA is the U.S. Organization under the National Aeronautical Association, under the Federation Aeronautic International  (sp ?) and should behave accordingly.
It  seems that all the AMA and most of the membership want is to be just one big model airplane club. That is sad to me, but then I have been a modeler for almost 71 of my 76 years. It has been a way of life.

Joe

Back when they made the commitment, there were only eight events and the USAF gave free rides to Europe.
Now there must be around thirty events.
The airlines lobbied and stopped the air force from giving rides to civilians. So the free travel went the way of the Navy Nats.

I hope AMA comment means "stop paying for travel", but not drop the programs.  As the FAI's official model aero club, AMA only needs to certify that a team is indeed our official team.  That shouldn't cost anything.

In my opinion, Flying Models, a commercial magazine with no captive readership, is superior to Model Aviation.

Maybe it is time that the Model Aviation become a commercial magazine available on all the shelves of grocery stores and drug stores(pharmacy).   That is where I learned about model planes and other things  in a magazine called Young Mens.    H^^

I'd get the magazine even if there was no insurance provided with my AMA membership.. But that's just me.

Also, kudos to Bob Hunt for his excellent article about auto paints.

I read it cover to cover - it's all about the things I enjoy the most in life as a hobby - flying things!
