THIS is where we should have a contest!
« on: October 31, 2008, 06:19:43 AM »
ears ago I spoke with Kermit about holding a contest at his place....he was all for it! I passes the baton to the PAMPA VIPs in the area and they never followed up. The site is great and a contest would be fun...
Here's what is happening soon:  http://www.fantasyofflight.com/roar-n-soar/

I wish that some aggressive Floridians would pursue an event there....

Have fun!

Rich,
Yes, could be a great place for a contest.
Some of our members have discussed the possibility of a contest, or frequent CL demos, with them, it is a possibility but currently on the "back burner".

We (Indian River Kontrol Society, aka IRKS) were approached to do some demo flights that weekend during Roar and Soar.
However, we are holding our Veteran's Memorial Fun Fly In on 11/7 and 11/8, proceeds of which will be donated to Disabled American Vets. We are hoping for a good turnout, for a great cause. See       http://www.irks.org "May" try to do something there on Sunday 11/9.

Amazing that you mentioned this ... my wife and I went last year, and it was great. Interesting enough, I was NOT involved with R/C or C/L at the time. We both were still recovering from a motorcycle accident, and a debate before we went was whether we were going to be able to spend so much time on our feet.  We walked around admiring the cars, airplanes and boats .... and then we came across a runway off to the side where a whole bunch of guys were flying R/C warbirds.  It had been a long time since I had flown and we watched them for several hours.  I was hooked again!  Its all I talked about afterwards .... I wanted to get back into flying!  My wife bought me a Hangar9 P-51 PTS for Xmas, and I was off and running.  I now have 2 R/C planes, 4 C/L planes, 1 C/L kit on the bench, and another waiting for the bench.

The motorcycle hasn't been out of the driveway ... no interest anymore [shrugs]

Fantasy of Flight - Roar and Soar is a huge place and a great way to spend an entire day.

Here are pictures from last year ..... the R/C planes are toward the end.

Roger - I would probably go to Roar-N-Soar on 11/8 .. but I'll be at your place burnin' up the C/L circle. :)!

Between the TBLF event this weekend, and yours next weekend ... 11/9 will probably be a honey-do day and wont make anywhere else.

Heres a pic .... I waited for an airplane to fly into the 'sites' before snapping. All I needed was a little smoke coming from the guns and some tracers!! I think it would have been a 'kill'!

I pursued this as a contest venue with Kermit's staff off and on, and it always came down to $$$$. They not only wanted a fee for the flying space used, but also wanted to charge each pilot the regular museum entry fee.

You'd think they'd be glad to donate a little field time to an organized event like ours there for free... I eventually gave up.

Let's face reality, even though we could be considered a crowd draw type event for aviation enthusiasts, Stunt contests can be pretty boring to the uninformed observer.

Eric is correct about the money thing with them. When they first started they let us use it a few times for sport flying on weekends but they didn't feel we were adding anything to there income. If you are looking for a place for a contest in the Orlando Tampa area there are some I could suggest if you really want to do it. There are many places in central Florida that have huge parking lots.

Last time I visited Kermit Week's place was just before hurricane Andrew.  I thought his collection was mostly wiped out!  Maybe not.

Hurricane Andrew did a number on his facilities down south, and the planes they couldn't get out got banged up. That was one of the reasons they relocated to Polk City , or the Future Town Center of Orlampa as Kermit calls it.  It is further inland and less likely to get hammered (at least less likely for a FL location).

The new location also puts him within easy driving distance of the Orlando attractions, Kennedy Space Center, Daytona, Tampa etc. Much greater tourism traffic. Many dad's need a day of history / power / mechanical art after spending time at the theme parks.

His B-17 was damaged in Andrew and is now part of a static display / diorama, just one of the many cool things to see do there.
