Thirty years ago this summer

     Since I sold my house and getting ready to move I have trimmed my model magazines down to a dozen and this one was in the bunch marked save.
It is the Jan 1989 Flying Models. I had long forgotten what was in it. When I opened it I found the Nering Special and views of the 1988 Nats by Larry Kruse.  Larry took this picture and someone told me I was in this issue so I got the magazine from the publisher.

Joe Gilbert now owns the Nering Special and flew it a few years ago to win Classic at the Brodak FlyIn. As I was tasked to write the Cover Story on Les for Control Line World at that time on Les it was quite an honor to have Les and Joe link up at the FlyIn and pose for a then and now photo for my article on Les! That plane although many years old now still flies very crisply in Expert Hands which Joe has two of fortunately!

This one is a little farther back,1962   That was 56 years ago and I was 22 when this picture was taken in Binghamton NY. I flew a lot of free flight in those years. Some contests has both FF and CL but I would spend most of my time in FF.

 It was an original but typical of the larger Class C models of the time. 900-1000 square inches  big tail, long tail moment, K&B 40. It was not a great model as the airfoil was to pointed. My Starduster 900 was a better all around model.

Neat pic's Ed! On the FF, is that Orange jap tissue or silk on the wing, and yellow on the tail? How many yards did that puppy take?

 Eric it was silk.   They use to give silk away for placing in top 5-6. I won a lot of it.
I remember it was hard to get the wing in my Dodge Dart two door. I had a 1968 428 mustang that nothing would fit in except towline and small ffs. But it was so cool drive it to contests as there’s were only 200 built. My 1968 road runners were huge by comparison. I had two 68 road runners. Do you remember my blue hemi.
