Thinner/Paint Compatability

Hi All,

I have a simple question, is Sig thinner compatable with Brodak paint?

Thanks

Unfortunately is it not that simple. SIG thinner either works or doesn't work with different batches of Brodak. I ran into this with the clear on the last airplane, it worked fine with one can, then I switched, and when I went to thin it, it clotted up like transparent cottage cheese. The older can of Brodak thinner also wouldn't work, and a much later can did. Fortunately I found all this before it got on the airplane, unfortunately, I used an older can of clear that would thin properly - and it shrunk everything tremendously.

I have heard of people having the same issue with SIG and batch-to-batch incompatibility. Probably, if it looks like it thins and mixes properly, it is probably OK to use. For my money I am going to get a bunch of SIG Lite-Coat and thinner and use that and nothing else.

I use DuPont 3602 thinner with Brodak paints and I use DuPont 3608 with Sig paints. I have not used Sig thinner in many years.

I cant put the 3602 in Sig, or maybe its the 3608 in Brodak. One of the mixtures will give you the same results that Brett described. I make sure to label all my jars with the brand and thinner so I don't make mistakes.

I am able to use all the colors from both companies on the same plane without problems. I do not recommend doing what I do but for some reason it works for me.

Hi peter, I tried an experiment just the other day, I dirtied a paint brush with Brodak dope and used Acetone to try to clean it. The Acetone did a great job cleaning the brush. I don't know if you can thin the dope with it, that will be my next experiment.

I used only acetone for thinning and cleaning many years.  The issues with that are easy blushing and over drying (brittleness) due to the extra fast evaporation rate.  I still clean brushes and guns with acetone but use Klean Strip Laquer Thinner at Home Depot for all dope thinning now and it works perfectly at about half the cost of the others.  I've used it mostly with Sig color and Certified clear.  I have used it some on Brodak colors but not clear.  I do also use retarder to about 20% of the mix.  Acetone actually works pretty well for everyday airplanes but where appearance points count I use the laquer thinner.
To the original question,  mixing isn't suggested so why chance it?
