Near Perfect Afternoon
« on: September 28, 2014, 05:06:11 PM »
It was Sunday afternoon.  I could have watched the NFL but it was a beautiful afternoon and since it had been predicted that way I had charged up my batteries last night so was ready to fly today.  I had a marvellous time.  I now have the two Ring Rat 250's sorted out so I can start teaching the grandkids to fly and I worked my way through about half the pattern with my 'A' plane.  I've managed to fly only about once a year for the last 5 years or so making for a lot of rust to knock off but after I did a reverse wingover without really thinking about it I realized that you don't really forget how to do the tricks.  I forget how to do them well but the basics still seem to be there so I'm a very happy camper.

And for the icing on the cake, the Lancaster from the Canadian Warplane Heritage returned home today after a 7-week tour of the UK.  It just doesn't get any better than this!
Life is simple. Eat. Sleep. Fly!
Best, Hoovie

Sounds great and I hope you get out more.   I got out after about two months  of sitting in the shop yesterday.  Well I have been busy with family,  grandkids that can't drive(one, car repossessed,  the other license taken away),  helping wife get stuff for remodeling,  and also putting a new side door on the shop.

The NW Skyraiders flew this (Sunday) afternoon also. Present were Howard Rush, Pete Ferguson, Kris Millard, and myself. Others were invited, but it was a short notice kinda deal. Howard called my house and left a message, but I was already on my way or there, apparently. I called Pete after my arrival. Mike Haverly was unable to attend, as was Gary Letsinger. Generally called folks that live close or closer. Howard was still flying after the rest of us had departed. No loud crunching noises were heard. I got in 3 flights, I think Kris and Pete the same. Pete and Howard were burning electrons, while Kris and I were running greasers.  ;D Steve

PS: A Stearman took off and did a few ciruits and landed. Some guy (apparently an Alaska Bush Pilot) landed a trike geared Cessna in an extremely steep angle and not really even lined up to the runway...but seemed to have it under control and a nice touchdown. Probably got 22 points or less, 'cause it wasn't at all what the judges were expecting to see.

PSS: Howard was practising getting his bottoms too low again. I hope his dawg makes it to Fallies next weekend.

Wish I could have seen that.   You know those guys in Alaska and the Yukon don't have the great runways we have here in the states.   When I was on the farm many years ago a guy had a bi-plane doing short field take offs and landings.   It was amazing watching that bird look like it was going to fall out of the air as it climbed out.  Then the landing as he brought it in sideways for a landing.   Almost no roll out as he would gun the power and take off to repeat the landing again.
