Title: They Say The First Thing To Go...
Post by: Andre Ming on October 21, 2023, 06:07:08 PM
...is the mind.

Well, I may be living proof of that.

I had cause to be out in my out building (that contains my model railroad layout) with the idea of just sitting in my big comfy tilting roll-around executive chair that's at my workbench, sipping on my iced cola... and just survey my miniature model train kingdom so as to decompress from the depressing day I've just had trying to revive my C/L flying. (More on that later in my other thread.)

I decided to go tidy up my layout room over where I'd been digging under the layout on the shelves seeing where I was at with my C/L supplies and such. (I have all of my C/L stuff localized under a certain portion of the model train layout.)

That area attended to, as I looked over at the darker corner under the layout, I noticed some boxes that I couldn't rightly remember what was in it. So I decided to investigate.

Before I even got down to the box in question... I discovered the stuff in pic 1.

Wow. I did NOT give it away after all! (Giving it away was the only solution I could come up with for me not being able to find this stuff in the attic, or under the layout where my C/L stuff was SUPPOSED to be.

I love surprises.

From there, I started removing the remaining stacked stuff that was on top of the "Mystery Box"... and lo and behold, it was yet another box of engines! (Pic 2)

Among that batch are the late-model "Fox Mark Somethings" that I thought I had (but wondered if I'd given them to someone at a meet/whatever), along with a whole host of other engines. Even found my 36X half-case that I use to mark drilling locations on the motor pod of a combat plane! Therein was also another NIB Fox 36X NB that I tagged with a synopsis of my impressions of it after examining/diagnosing it.

Oh, and among the other 36X engines, I found another 35 Stunt AND a Fox 35 "Blue Ribbon" engine. (Predates the 36X.)

Wild Child the wife says this is a sign that I'm not to give up on resurrecting my C/L flying. (After today, I was seriously ready to throw in the towel.)

SO... there you have it. I reckon' seven years is a long time among all the busyness and the way I've packed 'n stacked n' moved around my C/L stuff over those years.

All fer now.

Whereas find the above stuff most certainly is a "good thing", there is a downside: The solvent carrier in the jars of color has evaporated.

CAN they be revived with thinner and agitation?

Yes Andre usually.   First put in a small amount of acetone to soften everything up-maybe leave it set a day or two.  Then you can add lacquer thinner to whatever thickness you wish.  I use Kleen Strip thinner from your local box store.  Lucky find,  especially the glue if it hasn't hardened in the tubes.

Well don't feel lonesome.   I was trying to move some stuff and found things I forgot I had.   Take care of those engines.  Also listen to Dave about the dope.  I don't use it any more. H^^

Thank you so much Dave for your input.

SO... I don't need to use the Sig dope thinner? I can use acetone followed by lacquer thinner? I have a gallon of "old style" (the real stuff) Kleen Strip lacquer thinner.

I think these are 4 oz bottles, if so, how much acetone should I put in per bottle?

And yes, all the glue tubes are still pliable.

Oh... and I received the SEVEN 4 oz tubes of Sig-ment I found/purchased today! I think I'm okay for a while on glue!

Finding the above helps offset my otherwise frustrating day spent messing with C/L.

Yeah, aging sucks! I didn't remember giving it away... but I didn't find it where it was "supposed" to be... so I figured I must have given it away because it would have been highly unlikely for me to throw that much butyrate dope away.

As for my engines:

I will eventually be going through them one at a time as mood inclines, and attending to their needs and try to resurrect them. If one is too far gone, or parts are non-existent, I will cannibalizing such for usable parts.

Yes, Sensi,  I will listen to Master Dave!

All fer now.

That SIG Lite Cote went for 38.00 per QT last time I purchased any.. A few months ago I sold 250 HO cars, several Diesels and a few structures.. I am now left with 1 GS3 2 C9 2-8-0 engines and a few narrow gauge items and I am selling off all my CL stuff.

Wow, Ty... sounds like you're getting out of the hobby business??

Andre about the acetone- it doesn't matter much but in a four ounce bottle I'd put in a couple tablespoons.  Actually for quite a long time I used acetone as my ONLY thinner while pinching hobby pennies but it leaves the dope dull and brittle so you don't want to do that.  Just enough to dissolve dried and or clumpy dope.  Lacquer thinner has a much slower evaporation rate by design so is best for thinning but is very slow to dissolve anything-if ever.

Dave:

Thanks. I'll use the acetone to soften the solids, then switch to lacquer thinner to bring it to usable fluidity.

All:

Forgot to mention that last night I also found a couple of repli-kit short kits for some vintage combat planes during my rootin'. Found a double kit of Riley's Voodoo. (Pic 1) and the short kit of the Wayne Welch "Zipper". (Pic 2) Both are laser cut short kits, but look to be quality for sure.

Now how cool is that?

Did these happen to come from Lazer Works?   I have a couple of short kits from them.   Also have short kits from merry ole England that are printed like the old Comet kits of years ago.  One has been cloned and flies great. H^^

I don't rightly know who made the double Voodoo kit. Next time I'm out in the layout building I'll try to remember to see if I can find a name.

Randy Daily created/cut the Zipper kit.
