A somewhat new AMA Opportunity for youth.
« on: May 18, 2012, 12:10:40 AM »
Just thought I might bring to your attention another fine opportunity if you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews etc. Not to get into the history of this but to bring up the opportunities for youngsters.

There is a lot of the information on the AMA web site. If interested go find it. But here are some basics to whet your appetite for youngsters to obtain scholarships to colleges.

1. Junior Senior age groups are now FREE for AMA membership. That runs through their 19th year. (See AMA web for details)

2. Sign up youths now. They continue to stay signed up through a 19 year date, again see Web site or membership application for details.

3. A youth has to be a continuous member for THREE (3) CONSECUTIVE YEARS prior to application for a scholarship. Those 3 years must each be Jan. 01st through Dec. 31 [prior to application). Again, AMA for details.

4. The great thing about this is that if a youngster joins AMA at a young enough age, he/she will become eligible for the scholarships when he/she attains the time to apply as per the rules. In the past with broken times, like a membership voids out on Dec. 31, and a youth did not renew until Jan. 02 or later, that year was not counted, and he/she may fail the 3 year test therefore is not elgible for the application.

5. Sign up your youths today. If they may not need it, so be it, however IMO it is better to have it and NOT need it than need it and NOT have it.

There are rumors that AMA membership is growing. For certain the youth ages are growing because of the free memberships that just might lead to a scholarship. Now most of these monies come from one or more trusts left by some wealthy people loving model aviation. I don't remember all those details at the moment, but if interested, AMA has the information.

I am signing up all my grand children etc. Planning some time this Sat. with a great neice (10) and a great nephew (soon 13) on the buddy box. They have AMA and one gets MA, thanks to a good Uncle.  Now the youths have to compete for these scholarships so it seems that there was a time when some liked to keep it somewhat exclusive. Well AMA has changed that to provide an equal playing field.

Edited to add: I can fly up to 65 ft lines in my back yard. We will get some CL stuff too.

My youths can beat YOUR youths!!!     #^   LL~

Well I got one for my grandson without asking when I sent in renewal.   But, I guess they forgot the three grandaughters as I did not get a renewal for them.   But, they don't want to fly anymore. H^^
