The Team Trials
« on: July 14, 2011, 07:44:33 PM »
Tonight, grandpa and I talked to my parents about going to the Team Trials and go to the Worlds next year.  Basically what we brought forth to the table, made them in favor of me going!!!

Now, I thought the Team Trials was September 8-9 until we looked at a calendar and found that was a Thursday and Friday.  That obviously cannot be right, so the team trails actually are on the 10th and 11th, correct?

Looks like I'll be going back to Muncie!!!!  #^

Matt,
That is great news. You have a lot of work ahead of you in the next couple months. You can do it.

I wish that you and Ryan could both go the WC.

All the best, I am routing for you.

Thanks Tom!

Ryan told me he's not going again because it's ultimately too expensive for him to do it more than once.  I am actually extremely suprised my parents jumped on the bandwagon of looking at flights once we told them about everything that's going on!!

Hi Tom
I think this is what your looking for

II – Qualification
Contestants must be members of the AMA; they do not need an FAI stamp. Junior entrants must not become 19 years of age during the calendar year of 2012. (USA team members selected are required to have an FAI stamp to compete in the World Championships).

So you only need to be a Member of the AMA and not a US Citizen...

When are the Trials ??  ;D

I am not positive but I would imagine that you will also need to be a US citizen, I was only asked about the age requirement for Jr.  I did not post any of the other qualifiers

Do you get an FAI stamp when you get there?

You don't need it for the trials, but you probably need to get it before you get to Bulgaria.

If you have a chance to be on the team to fly in Bulgaria, don't let money stand in your way.  In 2014 you might not have the opportunity to compete and if could be an even more expensive trip.  In FAI business, opportunity doesn't always knock again.

The FAI doesn't care about citizenship, it's a matter for the national aero club (AMA) to name the team.  The only rule is: You can't fly for one country, then fly for another two years later, you would need to sit out one cycle.

Matt, get in close contact with those that have been there and done it.  I remember an F2C team member saying the AMA paid for most of the expenses during official days at the Worlds.  It was the expenses of getting there and back plus the food, hotel/motel and side expenses.  I think he stated it was over $1,000.00 on his out of pocket expenses.  Just get to the trails and make the team.  Start on  getting passports now.  Just think a few years ago I could go into Canada or Mexico with just my drivers license and get back.  Now I need a passport to get back into my own country.   H^^

Hi All

Keith reminded me this was in the AMA Blue Book governing teams and team selection:

"13. Rights of Representation. Program participants and team members who are not citizens of the United States must have two years of legal residency and hold a green

card. Additionally, they may not have represented another country in any FAI airsport activities during that period. This time period coincides with the conclusion and

beginning of the relevant World Championships. Participants/team members are not required to be citizens of the United States."

So actually it looks like you do not have to be a citizen.

Randy

Randy, thanks for pointing out that the "stuff" that governs our support and participation in a World Champs event can be found in AMA's "Blue Book". It's available on the AMA website.

I suggest all (especially you, Doc! A lot has changed since you last were involved!) look closely at the support portions. A World Champs trip is an expensive proposition. AMA's support has eroded continuously in the 30+ years I have been involved.

One of our Moderators could pin a "Pledge" post for Matt's WC expenses, if he makes the team. If we all chip in, it will help. Of course, there is already a PAMPA fund that we can donate to, but some might feel better about a more specific recipient.  H^^ Steve

I think the AMA sent me a check for around $690 a week before I left for Hungary. This covered most of my spending on my trip as well as part of the van rental. My airline ticket was $1700 and I would imagine that Bulgaria will be about the same. It is expensive but well worth it. It is an experiance that can't be duplicated. There is something special about being part of a team and working together for a common goal.

Matt, I will get those take apart pictures to you soon. I would reccomend using the same take aprat system that I used and Dave is using now. A full length wing requires a very big box.

My other grandfather who came up from Long Island to celebrate my birthday is a travel agent and we roughly looked at what the cost would be to fly into Istanbul Turkey (The closest airport to Bulgaria) and the cost is around $1100.

I am going to be using the two piece wing that you and Dave are using.

I posted a $200 pledge for Matt on Stuka Stunt.  I can make it available to help defray costs of getting to the trials or for the actual trip to the W/C.  He just needs to let me know.  I have never met Matt but I have seen his videos and read the many posts about his involvement in PA.  I believe he represents the future of the hobby and that he deserves all the support we can muster up.
