Title: The Search For A Domain
Post by: Mike Griffin on February 03, 2012, 09:59:01 PM
I have received a lot of e mails asking about my website, modelplanesofamerica.com and why they cannot get on it.  Well here is the short version of a long story.  The main reason is that I took it down....temporarily.  I would have never dreamed that the name I chose would single me out as a hobby shop when people Googled it but I was getting a half dozen calls a day wanting to know if I had RC Boats or CA Glue in stock.  I had to go through a spiel that I was not a hobby shop and blah blah blah.  In addition the web hosting company I was using was not the greatest in the world in several respects.  So I parted ways with them rather abruptly and when I tried to transfer the domain name they said they now owned it.  I don't believe that but I am not making a stink about it because of what I previously said about being mistaken for a hobby shop.

I don't know if any of you have seriously tried to shop for a GOOD domain hosting company, but it is not easy.  There are about a bazillion of them out there and believe me I know...I have talked to most of them.  After a lot of phone time I have finally settled on one that I have contracted with for a year and If I can learn how to use their site building tools, I will have it up sometime in the near future.

The name of the site is Controlineclassics.com.  The reason I picked this is that I deal exclusively in Control Line Kits and accessories and I am hoping that I will not fall into that Google pool of hobby shops when people are searching for RC ARFS.  If you try and go to the site right now, you will get some goofy thing the host threw up to show it is under construction and has nothing to do with modeling at all.

For now, just please e mail me if you have any questions and I do want to thank all of you who took advantage of the discount prices on the RSM kits in January.  I will Post a special in Vendors Corner this weekend for February.  I will have to get Sparky or Bill to change my Vendor's corner name again (sorry guys) since I have changed the domain again.  Until they can do so, I will still be posting in Vendors Corner under Model Planes of America.

I hope this will be the last time I have to go through this until I die.

Thanks for you business and patience.

Mike

You mean to say you were not enticed by those hot commercials of Danica Patrick for Go Daddy.Com
Thank you for sharing this. I didn't realize what a pain it could be.

Mike; I have two websites, and I've used Web.com (for hosting) for years and haven't had any problems. Can't tell you about their tools as I use Front Page for that. I've used Go Daddy BD (before Danica) for name renewal with no issues. A few years ago AD (after Danica) I moved one site to Go Daddy and have had no issues.

If you're doing your own design work on the website, try to find an old copy of Front Page (Microsoft doesn't publish it anymore). It works and "feels" much like Word and is easy to make a decent website with.

Good Luck!!

Brian
