Title: The ride home from Brodaks saturday June 15
Post by: De Hill on June 16, 2013, 07:55:46 PM
Elwyn and I left Brodak's at 3 pm and headed west on I-70, hoping to make it to Saint Louis. 70 miles outside of Indianapolis, we get a call from my wife Ruby who had just gotten a call from Joe Gilbert who was 26 miles from Indy at a dead standstill in traffic. He told Ruby to tell us to go south to hwy 40 and go east into Indy. We did that, and the going was slow. There was a farm town every 5 miles. We saw a lot of old buildings, and in one of the towns there was a church that was HUGE. I would like to hear the story on that one. We  called Joe after an hour, and he said the traffic jam had been caused by road construction that started about 27 miles from Indy, continued through the town, and went on for 55 miles west on Indy on I-70.

We finally headed north and got on I-70, went slowly through town and finally started to get away from the construction barrels. I said "we are lucky, Elwyn, I haven't seen any roadkill deer". 5 seconds later, we saw a roadkilled deer. 10 seconds later, we saw the yellow diamond shaped sign with a leaping deer in it! We went south 30 miles before we found a motel. We must have seen several thousand orange construction barrels. We think that the Indiana DOT has a large ranch were they grow these things. They should be the state tree of Indiana!

We got into the motel around midnight.

We left the motel at 6 am Tulsa time and headed southwest. We finally got out of the construction zone, and all was well, we were running 70. Then the rain started, and we had a four hour slow run through the rain. It wasn't much fun.

Elwyn saw a sign for a vacuum cleaner museum in Rolla, Missouri. He thought a good motto for the museum would be ," It really sucks!

We finally got out of the rain around Fort Leonard Wood. We sped up and got into Tulsa around 3 pm.

I've had all the fun I want for a while.

I think Indiana is like Illinois. There are two seasons, winter and construction! LL~ LL~ LL~

Thanks to you for the nice descriptions and to Elwyn for his usual GREAT pictures!
   Type at you later,
     Dan McEntee

PS to add, I agree with Uncle Mikey. I went out today with Jason Pearson for about three or four hours to help him trim a new airplane. Felt like I was out there all day!
I used to be able to fly all day, now it takes me all day to fly!

Glad you made it home okay.  Myself I left the Church at 10 AM headed for Stillwell OK.   After lunch stop at Neosho we got there 15 minutes too early.   Finally got on the road home about 0530 PM and pulled into the drive just before 1030 PM.   Would have been sooner of the bladder had a bigger capacity.

Welcome home and thanks for all the updates and photos De and Elwyn! I hope they have to roads straightened out before mid July. I just got back from Dallas where ALL roads appear to be in construction and 635 looks like a war zone. I don't need any more highway drama.

We left Sunday morning from Brodak's at about 7am. At 8:30, we hit a bump in the road and that unhitched the trailer from the truck (the planes were fine).  THANK GOD FOR SAFETY CHAINS!!!! after replacing the ball on the trailer, we were back on the road two hours behind.  We didn't get home until 10pm last night.

As usual, it was a fantastic week in Carmichaels, despite the rain. There is never a dull moment.  The Thundergazer is the best flying airplane I've ever flown, and is full of towering awesomeness! My first official flight was the 7th on the airplane.  The 2nd official was it's 10th.

There are only going to be three more Brodak Fly-Ins, so if anybody is considering making the trip, they should do so sooner rather than later.  Barring some unforeseen circumstances, we will be there for the last three.
