The PBY flies, here's proof!
« on: May 06, 2010, 07:59:53 PM »
With thanks to Mike Schmitt here are few shot's of the PBY in flight from the Polk City, IA spring opener this past weekend. It was not entered in competition but a few demo flights were put up by myself and Keith Sandberg. Mike himself also got in a flight with it on Sunday. Keith has now performed every pattern maneuver with it at least once now and while obviously not a "World Beater" it is a fully capable stunt model. I thank Keith and Mike for demonstrating the planes full capabilities, which are much more than my own. ;D

wwwarbird glad you have the 40’s working. What is the engine run times? I have been busy with my new Airacobra getting that trimmed out. Now I will have to get back on my Heinkel 219 Saito 40’s for run times and prop size. Keep us informed.

That's a great accomplishment, cool! I also get a kick out of the optical illusion in the 6th photo... makes the inboard engine look just off center from the fuselage. Bet is sounds wild in the air.

Thanks for the comments guys. y1

 W.D.,

It would be really cool, and totally feasable, but I don't plan a full fuse version anytime soon. Not that I wouldn't love to do a full fuse one, but I've got too many other ideas for new scratchbuild projects. One example is the Helldiver I'm currently putting the final clear coats on, stay tuned... VD~ ;D

W.D., to your #14---

Have you ever SEEN a PBY in flight? Fuse looks like a EEE-width shoe!

That might just make a difference in the "stuntability!"

In any event, I hope he goes for it... What next? A He-111Z, with two fuselages and 5 (yes, FIVE) engines?

In terms of wierd and wonderful models, I'm half tempted to do a Northrop XP-72 Moonbat blended fuselage twin for an upcoming Tucson 1/2A Multi- Profile Scale meet. ...Talk about your contradictions in terms...

It's all fun, and all personal, physical and real... No limits, except the length of the lines...

Thanks Lou, and seriously, the HE111Z is something I've spent some time on and considered for the Tucson 1/2A meet. I've done the homework on it and it would be totally do-able with some user friendly engines like broken in Norvels. The way to really do that one though would be to also incorporate the ME109 piggyback fighter and release it during the flight and then fly it separately under power. Heh-Heh ( ;D), this is fun because some people think I must be kidding, but I'm not. I'll have to skip that project for now though only because it's not in my budget or time off allowance to make Tucson, and I've got other scratchbuild ideas that outweigh it in my own mind for now. One of those ideas happens to be a straight up HE111 stunter for two .15's. or .25's. The design in general scale naturally lends itself to good stunt proportions if you take a good look at it, just have to make the stab and elevator a little bigger. If anyone is looking for an all new semi-scale scratchbuild idea just get ahold of me, I've got more ideas than I'll ever get a chance to build. y1

As far as the 1/2A Moonbat, it's a great idea and again one I've considered but it's already been done. Very nicely I must add though, check out the photo gallery on Sam's Stuff website. y1

Would the props clear the deck if you left the undercarradge off ?

You get get a differant vertical C.G. , though'd need a rubbing strip or a T/R wheel concealed in the hull .
