Title: The next big thing in Stunt? - The 4 stroke or Electric or tuned pipe killer.
Post by: PJ Rowland on April 01, 2011, 03:22:54 AM
I have been toying around with what to do engine wise for a while now.

Everyone is quite impressed with how strong the most recent dominant stunt engines such as Electric have become. -
Tuned pipes were very big in the mid 90's along with 4strokes.

Many people are searching for the next big thing in stunt power - always looking for more grunt and constant speed.

I have been doing alot of testing with a great little engine -

A Micro Jet turbine engine. The RC boys have been using it in Jets for along time and at full throttle they provide STRONG CONSTANT THRUST.

I picked this New model up which is avaliable online and I have been blown away with its power and constant speed.

Lap times can be slowed to 6 second Laps, you can adjust the Fan Blade to have low pitch and run high thrust - and acheive the power of the strongest Piped ship, the thrust of a 4 Stroke on Steroids But easy reliable power.

We have modified an exisiting stunter to house the turbine and the flights so far have been nothing short of breathtaking.

I know your thinking about the weight : So here are some specs :

Weight : 13.9 Oz Complete with all Parts

Thrust is at 1.7kg- albeit during flight with a low pitch fan turbine it works.

Here are a few more pics.

Wind ? No problem.. Constant Speed VERY. - Next big thing ? I think so.

That sounds fascinating! I think lots of people will jump on the bandwagon.....................................hold on a minute, isn't it April 1st?

Regards,

Andrew.

Ive had good success with the power delivery - I dont think its' any bandwagon - Many said electric was a fad..

This is another engine choice at our disposal - Less Drag - No P Factor, constant power. I like what I see.

PJ,

If you look carefully at the pictures, you'll see that you have a few screws loose.

For US flyers, here is a pertinent document  -

(also, attached below)

That is just the Safety regulations - there are 12 OTHER documents related to model Turbine operation, many of which mention C/L models in the title.

Hmmm.  I think I see a glow plug and a fuel line, so it runs on fuel and not sparks.  OK, how do you ever get your fingers in the nozzle to flip that little fan blade? LL~

Sense weight dont matter here's my idea.

Oh and by the way they guy who flies this is one brave soul!

Robert - Its not heavy at all ; Its only 13.9 oz complete. I also do not have to worry about adding anything else like prop, spinner, ect ect..

My Stalker 61 with tank weights 410 grams - Same as ts - So with 1.7kg of thrust vs - Not near that much its a no Brainer.

So PJ,
Show us the plane you have installed this in. S?P

One thing people forget is... How much fuel is that baby gonna use?

At least Jet A1 is cheap. But the weight of fuel...

Is the starter motor going to be a flying component or does it stay on the ground?

That's much smaller than I realized.  I've always wanted a scale F-86F.  That would be just right.

As for maneuverability, just vector the thrust.

How about an electric powered version of the external fan?  Plenty of room for experiments and fun.

That turbine may be very light, but don't forget to factor in the weight of the flux capacitor. LL~

Fuel or battery is part of the total power package and must be considered

there are also very effective electric "turbine" fans now and they may be able to be governed.
But for those who want wet power for their ducted fans, Zero Displacement Engines are clearly the way of the future.

.. should be cheaper than turbines too, and doesn't need any electronics.

Fuel consumption should not be a problem, just use a back pack mounted fuel tank, run the fuel line thru the handle out the lines to the engine.  Once the engine is running centrifugal (centripetal) [tomatoe/tomaato] force will feed it!

Happy April Fools day Stunthangers
:P

Thanks for all that info Bob - You were spot on with the " serious " part - This is first and foremost a Hobby ,one I take very seriously when in competition, but one I very much enjoy and have fun doing with friends.

The Nats will be serious for alot of us - but there is still room to crack a smile, enjoy a laugh with friends and be thankful everyday how lucky we are to be doing what we are doing.

Happy April Fools day
:P

Crap, you mean that was all a joke?  Dang!  I just bought a plane on ebarf that was said to have been designed for that little turbine.  Paid large for it.  HB~> Now I feel like such a chump.  Any chance you could sell me the one in the pictures?  I still have some money left. LL~

PJ, while at the NATS, watch out for Windy and his water balloons I have heard about.  Some of the guys like to play mind games also.   Don't ask me how I know.  Main thing is to still keep having fun.   H^^

(I'm guessing they have April 1 down under as well.)

I have been looking forward to this, and here is my ideal subject for it:

Sure it is...the exhaust nozzle has been removed, along with the ignitor lead.
