The Mother Load of Windy Videos
« on: March 03, 2021, 09:10:02 AM »
There has been some discussion recently about Windy videos, those that have been digitized and uploaded to YouTube and then deleted, and then some feel that some may have been lost. Well, today that may be solved a bit.

We have a club member that some of you may know, Walt Brownell. Walt is a retired McDonnel-Douglas engineer who flew C/L stunt and scale for many years but has recently been in declining health including the onset of dementia,  and has been moved to a care facility after experiencing a nasty fall at home. Last summer, Walt had members of the club come to his house and gave away his entire model collection and they have been scattered amongst the membership, and after not being flown for quite a long time, many have been brought back to life and are being flown. Walt was brought to our Fun Fly last summer and got to see some  of his creations back in the air where they belong.

Walt was also a subscriber to Windy's video series and I think may have been from the very beginning. Yesterday, we started the final cleanout of his basement shop so his family can prepare the house for sale, and one of the duties that fell to me was gathering all the videos tapes from the four corners of the basement. I took a pad  of paper and some pencils in hope of cataloging the collection, but quickly decided that wasn't going to be possible in the time frame we had, so i just started boxing them up so they can be moved. It took me the better part of a couple of hours just to do that, and I have pictures of the pile of boxes and crates for anyone that wants top see it. I have NO way of knowing how many or what tapes are there at this time, but like the title of this thread says, it has to be the mother load of Windy videos. I still have to go back today to pick them up and figure out where I am going to store them for at least the short term. I am posting this thread to spread the word to those that are still interested in digitizing these and preserving them and they can be the caretakers of the collection. Windy's stuff is quite historic I think and should be preserved, I just don't have the space nor the equipment and technology to do that.

So while I am working on getting the pile relocated, who would like to be the caretaker? It would not be too much of a guess to say that there may be every Windy video that he ever offered. Like I said, Walt was a subscriber and dealt with Windy a lot, so that would not be too far from a real possibility. There are Brodak tapes, NATS tapes, construction and finishing tapes. Many are numbered. There was just too many of them for me to even begin to try to make some note of what is there. So if there is a person or group that would like to take these, please let me know. You would just be responsible for picking them up or paying for any shipping costs and I'm sure it may take a while to figure all of that out. For now, I am just leaving them as I packed them and will put them in my storage locker while this all evolves. I am in the St. Louis, MO area near I-270 in North St. Louis County. For someone in the midwest region, it would make a lot of sense to just come pick them up rather than incur a lot of shipping costs and risk any damage.

I'm of to Walt's house again!

Dan,

I agree with Kevin's comment, for all we know this could be the only nearest to complete compilation of Windy videos series that exists.  Please guard them with your life (an expression only) until the right individual or organization with the savvy to digitize these into a usable library comes by.  I myself hadn't yet returned to CL in the 90s when Windy's video development was at its peak; today I often find myself pursuing the videos on YouTube for a particular topic which is somewhat difficult to do. If someone was willing to take this task on I'd for one would be willing to contribute to help finance the material expense of the effort. I'm sure there are services that would provide the service but I wonder if they could decipher the content into a workable index as well as a modeler could. If nothing precipitates isn't there an archive at AMA for this sort of thing??
You have a treasure here!

Ill do it, I can cover shipping or head over in my SUV to pick them up (64 hour round trip according to google). I had already begun to digitize his tapes and DVD'd at the request of a few folks here. As well as YouTube I am looking at the plausibility of them running ad free on the miniature aeronautics site where I have loaded the legacy site of Dave Day http://miniatureaeronautics.com/Dave_Day, Clause Maikis and Al Rabes content.

Let me know

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve, As I mentioned in my post “I am looking at the plausibility” of of doing this as well as YouTube. I have not done it yet. Nor have I loaded content to YouTube.
I have a box load of DVD’s to do and I have only begun to do this so they can be added to whoever wants them on their YouTube channel.

I am still torn about editing out some content. If it is going on YouTube we will need to loose the intro as it is often run over copyright music. Windy also copied copyright movie segments and copied parts of other specialist DVD’s which will have to be removed.

For the record, Windy made over a thousand DVDs and VHS tapes, this is a lot to catalogue.
The first was the Green Box Nobler build. With his last build being the old time ship the “Big Job”

Q?

Should we be posting Windy and Karyns house repairs and holiday dinner parties?

Do folks want to see Windys multiple lone flights?

Speaking for myself I am mostly interested in seeing the builds.

I have received PMs from several of you and will get back to all of you. It did not work out for me to pick them up today, and will try again tomorrow. That will allow some  more time for discussion on the best way to deal with these. Once I get them in my possession, I will do my best to help out whoever gets them. Once they leave my possession, I don't want them back, and their further disposition will have to be determined and maybe handed off to another interested party once their existence is secured digitally. I only want to handle them once.
I think the only thing I can ask is that Walt Brownell's name stay with the collection some how once they are assembled on or into a web site. I think he would like that and it would be a nice little legacy for a really nice man.

If youve lent a book , and been told ' i gave it to ' X ' for safe keeping / So it woulnt be lost / so nobody could find it  %^@ :o ???
You WOULD NOT LEND THEM ,

Or GET A DEAL IN WRITEING , signed . with thier grandmothers maiden name . and Penalties , such as their lifes savings for non compliance .

Also might pay to specify appropriate safe storage conditions , as these things can deteriorate , Like olde movie reels .
===================================================================================

Congradulations and salutations on the achievement .Keep a firm reign on the recipient / s .

Specify ultimate fate of tapes . Likely PAMPA Id think . Now theyll need a permanate archive facilty at the Muncie Musem .  ;D S?P mw~ H^^

Within my modest abilities I would be happy to make a financial contribution toward this endeavor.
It would be nice to have them on a platform that doesn’t require content editing as some of us enjoy his musings as recorded. You can always fast forward past them if certain things don’t suit you interests.

Thanks for your efforts Dan.

You can count me in to help convert and upload a batch of his videos to YouTube, Dan. I will cover the shipping cost. If we keep getting volunteers we can chip away at the pile of tapes together. That way we can all enjoy them. I talked to Windy about this. His reply was: "Upload all of them!!!!!!" & "Keep the flame alive!!!".         Kevin King.

That is Awesome ! It is great that we have the creators blessing. Windy gave me a pile of the master copies when I visited him in 2016. I am willing to send them to whoever is doing the copying etc and I also will pay the shipping costs WE will figure out first which ones are duplicates to what you already have and I will send any you don't have that I do have .GREAT work guys!!!!!!

Of Course , you want to start with the Super tigre G-51 Tape ! , and then the beginning, Numero Uno thru . Might make it easier to keep track of the efforts .10 points . 11/10 for getting this together .
But keep records . So theyre al accounted for and in order .

Actually, just thought , if theirs others with engine set up , these'd be intresting . Prioritised . Or a quick nap and wake up in two years , and they should all be there .  :-\ Would avoid all the tension .

Well, the first step in this project has been completed. I was able to pick up the tapes today and they are in my possession. My next step is to find a place to store them either in my garage or in  my storage locker down the street. Space is at a premium here!  I need to rebox them because they are in a mix mash of different sizes and questionable condition. In doing that I hope to maybe get a count of the number of tapes, and maybe even catalog them. If i can get them all in the same size box they will stack better and be easier to ship..
I have heard from several of you with some good ideas on how to handle this project. While I tie up some loose ends here, keep brain bashing things. I'll post what I find out as soon as I can.

A quick update. Some of the boxes I had these in were not the best and several different sizes, so to make the easier to handle, I spent several hours today outside in the chilly sunshine and I reboxed them into some of those file storage boxes from Office Max. That let me kind of look over some of them and get a close estimate of the total number of tapes. From what I have seen, and going from memory reading what other people have seen of Windy's videos, I doubt that this is a complete collection , if you can believe that!

   I'm estimating 686 tapes!!

Now just gotta find a place to stack them.

I'm estimating 686 tapes!!

Each Tape / DVD runs for 2 hours and your 686 tapes amount to roughly 44% of Windy's total filmed output over the years.

Just these tapes alone equal 1,372 Hours, or if you sat and watched them for 8 hours each day it would take 171 days to view them all.

For Example;
The Miss Ashley build and trim videos had over 33 VHS Tapes and were numbered from 200 - 233
The Urtnowski / Adamusco 90 Spitfire was over 50 DVD's

I just came in from working on these all day and I'm a little beat but do have some other numbers to post, but still didn't get to look at all of them to know exactly what's there. If you have a complete list, that ought to be really handy!!

I was able to count 40 Miss Ashley tapes.
    Dan McEntee

Each year Windy recorded the year as "that years plane", so although you have counted 40 Miss Ashley tapes, only 33 of them were devoted to the Miss Ashley build and trimming.
The rest were local contests, flying at the local field etc. Windy numbered these but often excluded the Nationals tapes, Brodaks and the team trials etc. from the sequential numbering (I don't know why).

I have begun to catalogue and digitize the boxes of DVD's I have here. They are being edited so that YouTube wont ban them for copyright infringement. Of course as Robert our host here pointed out, this all hinges on written permission from Windy to load them to the web.

Here are some high lights of what I was able to see today while re-boxing some of these tapes. I already mentioned the Miss Ashley series. there is also the Sea Fire series, B-25, Tigercat, 43 some odd tapes marked Spitfire in one way or another, Cardinal, Brodak Cardinal, Strega, Typhoon, Jett 60 Spitifre, Brodak Nobler series, several NATS series and Brodak  contests, and I didn't get to handle all of the tapes!! There were two boxes and a plastic tote that I estimated the number of tapes in each based on what I handled and re-boxed, so I don't know what is in those containers.. They were already loaded in the box the same way as I was doing it again, so I maybe off a tape or three but I think I'm close. Stay tuned for further developments as they become available while we work this thing out.

     Hi Steve;
I kind of knew early on that this was going to be a big job and that it would take several people to be involved and help in other ways. I am emailing back and forth with people and we are brain bashing this to try ad eliminate unnecessary cost and such and make them available in a couple of ways. No use in rushing things, and doing things right the first time is a priority! We may need some financial help and several of you have already volunteered that already and that will be a big help.
A positive that I see coming out of this , is that the chances of getting a complete collection of Windy's videos may be a reality. The more you get together in one place, the easier it is to figure out what you don't have , then you can go look for it!
   Thanks for the interest,

OK kiddies! Time to update this a bit. After some discussion with several people and brain bashing the the logistics and enormity of this project, we have come up with a plan. I am going to sit on the collection and continue to try and get an idea of exactly what is there as we move forward. I have located the Miss Ashley series and tapes, at the suggestion by and help of a friend out west, and I have sent tapes #200 through #234 to him. That's 35 tapes!  There are many more tapes to this series, but these are the gist of the construction of the original airplane. From what I have seen the tapes in this series go up to #256. If I understand correctly, my friend is going to do a basic conversion of the tapes to digital. He has plans for using them on a preservation website he is planning. He will then send off copies to Kevin King for the digital editing to rip out the offending music and such, and then upload them to YouTube. This is a monumental task, even divided up, but should ensure that the job gets done and the videos will be available on two locations, increasing people's ability to find them. To keep the hobby and event in existence in the future, I think this will be pretty important. The internet is where people go to look for stuff,  and to aimlessly browse and waste time! So it stands to reason that if you make something easy to find for those who are looking for it, and at at the same time, make it easy for people to stumble across it accidently, I think that gives the event the best possible chance to exposure on the web. I just took the box with the first 35 tapes to Fed-Ex today and my friend will get to work on those as soon as possible. At NATS time, we will  pick up the rest of the collection from me on the way to or home from Muncie. Then he will have the whole collection at his and Kevin's disposal and the progress can continue. I would like to thank those that offered up help and suggestions, and of course, thanks go to my friend and Kevin for doing the lions share of the work. There may be a need to some fund raising to help finance this project, and people will be able to help in that manor, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. But for now, the show is officially on the road!
Stay tuned for further developments as they become available!!!

Update. I have created a You Tube channel, exclusively for Walt Brownell's collection of tapes. Things are still in the early stages but the ball is rolling. The videos will be shipped to me in batches. And I will keep adding more and more as I receive them. Until then, I will be uploading a few videos from my collection.  I will also add an index to whats on each video in the description and comments section.       https://youtube.com/channel/UCQLZOloDrMlE4LDcTwc1wvw

That video was from the initial test flights. We were still trying to figure the thing out! I can not find hardly anything written on setting up a OS.70FS for stunt, so applied what I had learned from my Saito .56. The model was built back in the same time frame as when Windy built his, maybe a bit later, and I don't think it's the same as Windy's.  I am really foggy about the dates, but may have been in the late 1990s to early 2000's. Windy had the Z-tron system in his I believe if that will help with the time frame. Walt can't remember anything about operating it, and I couldn't find any notes on it, so just shot from the hip. I do not think that Walt flew it very much because he couldn't get any consistent runs from it. He had intended for it to be flown in stunt, and also installed the hardware for it to be flown in Scale competitions with a throttle, but I have removed al of that to save a few ounces. He set it aside and moved on to other projects, and soon discovered electrics, and really grasped that technology and sole off most of his engines after that. I kept working with the carb settings on it and got the throttle closed off to about 1/2 throttle, and in the video was using Powermaster YS-20/20 fuel. I could not get more that a 4 or 5 minute flight on that, so dropped down to 15% cool Power with a 4.5 ounce tank that was in it, and got the flight times up to the 7 minute range. The model weighs 80 ounces, and over 22 ounces of that is engine and prop!!  He had a 15-5 Zinger on it and that wasn't enough thrust, and even at the RPMs needed to do the pattern and get a decent lap time, I still could not get the full pattern in. Dropping down in nitro to 15% and going up to a 14-6 helped a lot and I have done some decent patterns with it. It is a handful!! I will pick up flight testing again this spring with a 14-7 and take off RPM in the 7800 range and that should be about the best we can get out of it. We'll fly it at demonstrations and such. It has a 65" wingspan so it takes up a lot of space!! One of my first projects in retirement is cleaning up and organizing around here to create some space for it. There may be a video of it flying and doing some of the pattern but I don't think we did one of the full pattern yet. I will for sure have it at our Fun Fly here in June.

I've watched the 8 Windy 87 Nobler build tapes, did he shoot a final tape of it flying?

The tape of him flying the Nobler Matt? That was the question.

I'd like to see it too.
