Check the size.  I had to keep working  with mine when I first tried to load it.

"RE-size" What is resize? I have tried to load pictures & get a message that the mega-somethings are to many something-or-others.

Sitting here at an iMac with photos on iPhoto. File is:
"/Users/vincentmankowski/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2012/11/05/20121105-163219/IMG_0878.JPG"
And apparently is a 2496 x 1664 JPeg of 1.2 MB

What is resize? Making photo smaller? Is it possible to make it less then 1.2 MB (how)?

Vince,

Do you have a photo management program?

Cameras can be set for "internet" photo where resolution is small.

If you like, just send me that photo and I can see what you have done.

Getting pictures to the size the forum will except.  I use a program that came with the computor.  When I click on a picture a menu comes up.  I select edit.   Then when new pic comes up there is a box that says resize.  Most times I do 50% reduction.  Once I get the pic in a smaller size I hit exit and check the size again.  Some times I may have to do it two or three times and sometimes I get it right on first try.  Depends on the picture.

I use a Cannon Rebel XT and import into a 4-year old iMac. I can save great photos but have learned I can only email a few at a time ..... I can upload to eBay..... but cannot post photos to any msg boards.

All I can do on the iMac is adjust the "color intensity" in other words decrease it so much it become a 'black & white' photo with a resultant "size" of 412kB.
This does two things..... it destroys the origional color photo (been there / done that)
And of course it keeps you form posting a color photo .....just a blac & white photo, that is, if 412kB is "resized enough."

I may look around the internet for something about "resizing"...............? Or I may just not post on the boards.

There's a good thread on the subject of photo resizing and compressing in the Administration Announcements Forum (top one). Look for a thread started by Rudy Taube near the bottom of page 2. It is largely PC oriented, and I admit to have tried to help a friend with pictures and his MAC, but I didn't understand his computer at all, a problem.

You'll get myriad suggestions for software to use. I had some stuff on my computer when I got it, and both Olympus and Canon software, and couldn't figure out any of them. My brother suggested IrfanView, and I found it easy to figure out with no problem. There is a version of IrfanView for MACs, and it's freeware (no charge, but donations are acceptable).

A) Start out by giving your picture a descriptive title, and 86 all the OEM crap that means nothing to you. My system is to add a % for each rework level. I also suggest using that folder on your desktop (if MACs have desktops and folders).

2) Basically, you want to reduce the pixel width to 600 > 800 pixels and keep the aspect ratio the same. Pixels are the little squares that make up pictures on TV's, LCG depth finders and Digital Cameras of all types. Too wide a picture on a forum usually makes the text of the message (and all following posts) that wide, requiring the reader to scroll back and forth to read each sentence...a PITA.

III) And then, you want to "compress", which is usually some sort of % rate or 0 > 100 scale. You do this just as you save the reduced version of the picture to your computer. It should all work somewhat the same, MAC or PC, so refer to the thread on the Administration Announcement Forum for more details...the light will come on. Maybe you know somebody who can talk MAC to you on the phone?   DK^ Steve

There a myriad of programs available for free download that will do this stuff...however being a paranoid "Old Guy" I don't trust free down loads...I've been burned by Bots etc.
I have a very inexpensive program called "Photo Expressions" that is very easy to use (even for an old mechanical engineer like me) and easy to figure out.  It's menu driven (like most) but uses plain language (not young folks computerese).
I got it at Office Max for about 10 bucks.  It works very well for general stuff like resizing etc.

I've been using the free download IRFANVIEW for several years, never a problem that I've run into.  The suggestion for it was made by the "Computer Guru" in our local paper.
Just remember to save the pic with a different name otherwise the original is overwritten by the program.

Look for "Open Source" programs.  Basically, if you can find it on Sourceforge.net then it's definitely open source, and there shouldn't be bots or viruses or any of that folderol.

There's three reasons for giving away software for free:

1: You're a nice guy, and you want to do good things for the world.  This is where open source comes in -- generally the code comes with a copyright that says, in essence, that you can modify it or whatever, but you can't distribute the program without making the source code available (so that other folks can do the same thing).

2: You've got a product to sell, and you want to give away free samples.  These programs should make it obvious where they come from, and they'll be crippled in some way -- they'll only work with some maximum size of documents, or for a certain amount of time, or you won't be able to save files, or whatever.

3: You're a lousy dishonest @#$%, and you want a vehicle for bots or viruses or whatever.  You'll burn in hell for eternity once you pass away, but while you're here you want to enjoy all of the high life that Russia or China or wherever you live has to offer.  So you write software, disguise where it came from, and post it around on freebie sites.

Software of the first and second types is generally safe.  Using software of the third type is like borrowing a needle from a homeless person when you need an insulin shot for your diabetes.

This is changing the resolution of the picture. I have an iMac and there is no problem with this. Actually the Mac is far, far easier to do it with than any Windows machine. If it's in iPhoto, double-click on it. Go to the File menu, select "Export...". Check that the file type is JPEG, if not, change it. Put Jpeg Quality  to Medium. Set the Size to Custom, it will ask you for the maximum dimension, try 640. Then hit the Export button at the bottom. It will ask for a filename, so put one in (don't leave it at the default or it might overwrite the original), then hit OK.

I just tried that, and it took a 20.2 megapixel file down to 45 KB and it was a reasonable size and looked pretty good. You can play around with the "quality" and "maximum dimension" settings until you get something you like.

The other thing I highly recommend is getting a program called "GraphicConverter" from Lemke software. This is the best reason to have a Mac instead of a PC. It is just capable enough and still simple enough to be useful, sort of like PhotoShop except not a hack job, and cheap.

You shouldn't have to have a program.  I just right clicked on the picture I wanted to upload to the forum and resized it to something under 800. D>K

As far as I could tell, this thread started from profile pictures. That is the pictures on the left here in the thread. Right?
Looks like 65x65 px is the max size. I don't remember if the forum resizes ones that are oversize.

(800 px is pretty good for pictures in threads)

Yes, that's how it started.  I couldn't figure out to get my profile picture up.  I had to resize it to 800x600.

A "profile picture" is different than an "avatar", which is that little picture over in the left margin. In this case, Mr. Johnson wanted to show a picture of his profile navy carrier model in a post, a Corsair I believe.   LL~ Steve
