HD;

I can't remember how big, but there was a "Scale B-36 Peacemaker" at the Nats one year and it was huge. Anyone out there remember it?

In past issues of American Aircraft Modeler and Air Trails, there was a Sgt Ford of the Air Force that built huge scale CL aircraft.  Those that I remember were:  C-5A Galaxy, C-119 Flying Boxcar, T-29, C-133 Cargomaster were several.  All were huge and the Galaxy required him to wear a harness with another flyer holding on to him as he flew it.

I think the largest flown were at Wright-Pat. I'll have to hunt up the article.  As I recall they were flying using a remote control set up and 200 ft lines.  Large scale models of existing military aircraft, and experimental aircraft.

A friend in Illinois was building a 1/4 scale Citrabra for a Quadra.  Don't know if he ever finished it.  I recall seeing a Zilch, back in the 50's, with a lawnmower engine, maybe 8 ft wingspan.  It flew at a contest in Beaumont.

How about a plane with 1000 sq. in. of wing, does that count? I know where there are two of these being built. Then there is one with 1524 sq. in. that is about to go on paper.

The largest model I have flown was my C-7A Caribou with a 76 inch wing span.

The largest I have seen competing was Dick Byron's B-24 Liberator with, as I remember, a 100 inch wing span.  When Dick transported it to the field the wing "sat" in the passangers seat with the back reclined.  I forget how he got it in and out.

The B-24 was a Stafford kit. 4 OK Max 25's , 14 lbs. It flew great but landed like a basket ball. Bouncy, Bouncy. I took it to Kiev in 1988 to the world championships. On the first flight, when I retracted the gear I could hear the crowd oooh and aaah. It was a thrilling sound I will never forget. It hangs in a hobby shop in Cedar Rapids Iowa now.

Cliff - regarding successful large stunt planes, I think you're right on about the Sweeper.

I restored Windy's second version to flying status a few years back and when I flew it, I was amazed at the performance. I would not hesitate to compete with it. As I recall, it was around 110 ounces.

I also have the original, a I-beam version in many pieces, that will someday fly.

To get an idea of the size, here's a picture of it hanging on my kitchen wall - compare it to the Nobler!!!

I remember someone posting an old, old picture of a guy trying to fly (maybe he did!) an almost full size Cub on what looked like towing cables!  Anyone else remember that picture?  Was the early '50s, IIRC.

I do remember some references to Sgt. Ford that Tom referred to.  He had some huge multiengined scale jobs. y1

The largest plane I have seen is the double up Flight Streak built by Dan Banjock and Ted Heinritz. Wingspan is 84", wing area is 1600sq" weight without fuel is 10.25lbs. The power is provided by an ASP 1.08 swinging a 16" prop. Many have seen it fly at Brodaks. In 2006 there was also a double up Buster and a large PT-19 both flying in scale.

The largest plane I have heard of was a B36 if I remember correctly. It had 3 whizzer motor bike engines and 3 dyna jets. An old member of the Philly Fliers said he helped build the model. I remember seeing pictures of it and I believe someone still has it.

To Everyone Crazy enough to follow this "Riddle"

It will take much to long to complete this one "CLUE" at a time. So let's just fill in the blanks OK? Here goes:

T h e  "Ringmaster  1000"----68"  Wing Span----1000 sq in Wing Area

40" Length----27 1/2" Stab Span---- Fox .78 Power----70-75 oz

LETTERS"

NUMBERS:

Now you can print it out if you wish, all you have to do is fill in the blanks with the given numbers and letters. Have fun all you problem solvers. From time to time during the day I will fill in a blank. If nobody has come up with the answer by 6:00 PM tomorrow night I will give you the answer. Hint: It is experimental, it hasen't been tried yet that we know of.

When researching the service history of my (full scale) 1943 Taylorcraft L-2M spotter plane, I learned that during WWII there were experiments aimed at getting small planes out of fields they could land in but were too short to take off from (easy to do, don't ask how I know). One "solution" actually put into practice was to THETHER one wingtip to a large fixed object with a line (don't recall the length but would have to be 200 feet or so) and fly the airplane around the pylon till flying speed was reached (about 50-60 mph) then release the cable attachment. I wouldn't care to try this myself, but they did lots of screwy things during the war. Actually this is about the speed our models fly at, so it is not inherently a crazy idea. The L-2 has deployable slats behind the LE on the top of the wing that allow it to be dropped into very short fields, by killing the lift on about 6 feet of span at the wing roots.

HERE IS THE LARGEST OLD PLANE THAT I COULD FIND!

I have one of those in the basement waiting for some more silkspan and dope to stiffen up the wings.  The first flight on it once it got up to speed it disappeared in flutter mode.  The only way to deep it from fluttering was to keep doing loops and 8's.  Also keeping lap times to 5.4 or more helped also.  DOC Holliday
