A few years ago, with the help of John Miller and Eric Rule, I produced a kit of the Kenhi Mustang. I had ordered a set of plans from Randy Smith and when they arrived I was absolutely blown away by the beauty of these plans. They are a true work of art and if you love to scratch build and love the design of the P51 mustang, I would highly recommend contacting Randy and ordering a set of these plans. Make sure you have a good size bench to lay them out on because they are about 15 ft long.
I did this kit kind of early on in my kit producing days and the kit sold fairly well but I don't know if any of them ever got built as I did not receive much feedback or any pictures of builds.
I checked with Eric at RSM and go some current costs on contest balsa and laser cutting and if anyone would be interested, I thought about re releasing a short kit of the model again. The kit would include all major laser cut parts necessary to build the model which would include ribs, fuselage sides and plywood doublers, fuselage formers and all tail components. Also I would include bent wire landing gears and a full size building plan. This is just a construction plan, NOT the big beautiful plan that Randy sells. You would have to supply any sticks, sheeting, blocks and control hardware. I do this to keep the price of the kit as reasonable as possible.
If there is sufficient interest in bringing this classic model kit back, I would be happy to do so. Even if you buy a kit I would still recommend buying the plan that Randy sells. Even if you do not build from it, it is a collectors item.
If I receive enough positive feedback from this post, I will post pricing and details in my Vendors Corner Section (Griffins Model Service)
Thank you

The Kenhi Mustang was kit number 1 that got Kenhi in Business, it is a Great plane and can be used in Old Time stunt, and sport scale, I am told the same person designed the Veco Mustang, and then , when he started the Kenhi kit company re-designed the Mustang and made it better looking and 50 sq inches larger , I have always had an interest in this plane, and have 2 kits of it, I would be interested in buying one of the Laser cut parts kit of the plane

Well, all that praise for the plans ... probably qualifies as an understatement! You gotta see 'em to believe ...

Can we get a look at the plans?

Well Mike, not much of a kit builder but I may be interested.

Wayne I do have a really good jpg of the plans. I have a small one and it is blurry. Maybe Randy will post them,

Thanks Randy for finding that. I looked through my pictures and could not find them. I have been through a couple of computers since I ordered them. Those pictures were taken in 2010 . That was still when we were living in Byron, Ga before we moved back to New Orleans.

I got that plan from Randy. But I don't understand how this design will not have a serious vertical CG issue. There is no dihedral like nearly all the other designs of warbirds with the wing at the bottom of fuse.. There is actually a very small amount of dihedral, because the topside of the wing is a straight line and the wing panels do taper to the tips. So the dihedral is only half of root to tip taper of wing thickness, 1/4 maybe 5/16". Most of D.Hutch & Pat Johnston designs of low wing warbirds have ~1" dihedral.

Allan this is not a modern design to go do battle with modern PJ designs and Rabe designs, it is a 1940s 1950s technology airplane, Have you ever seen a veco Mustang ? The same guy design it before he left and did this Mustang design, BOB HUnt won one of the First NE Old tyme stunt contest with a VECO Mustang. You have to remember this is a pre 1952 design, and its a good one, it is 50 sq in larger than the Veco , and it will fly the stunt pattern.

Thanks for showing us the plans Randy, I remember seeing those photos before now. I'd love to say I'm a candidate for a kit and building one, but I've got about 175 years worth of inventory in my shop and on "The List" already.

Which version of Mustang plans did Mike Palko use?

Which version of Mustang plans did Mike Palko use?
That was explained bu Bob Hunt in another thread here recently about the Veco Mustang. Like Randy Smith said, Bob won the first GSCB Old Tyme Stunt contest with a Veco Mustang, and then set out to design his own. If I remember correctly, Mike, Bob and some one else started building copies, but Bob never finished his. It is significantly different from the Veco or Kenhi versions.

Here is the plan that comes with the kit that was drawn for me by John Miller in 2010.

That leads me to ask the question, why couldn't one add the sufficient dihedral to help with the vertical CG issue and still be old time and classic legal? It is not changing any of the critical moments, airfoil or other dimensions. And as there are other low wing designs from that era that have dihedral in their design for that reason, that was a known modification or change a person could do very easily.. The Sterling Spitfire is another one that could use this small change.

Hi Dan
There were some back when, that people added dihedral to, you would just need to recut the fuse wing cutout, or the fuse sides

I have Whitely's, it has sufficient dihedral if not built like a ton of bricks and it's an Old Time model anyway. Bob's weighed 38 oz.
