Just out of curiosity, have you ever weighed what the total finish was from bare wood to the final coat of wax? This is just the finish, nothing else on any of your planes lately?

Yes. The finish goes anywhere from 8-10 oz

Wow, that was quick. I was curious because I just wanted to compare it to my Monokote and dope finishes I do. The good thing about Monokote is that you know what the weight of the wing will be even before you cover the wing etc. I find that Monokote helps me maintain my weight. On the Hamburger (625 sq in) the total finish was 7 1/4 oz and on my Triple Nickel (650 sq in) 7 oz.

Looks real good robert.

A .75 will have no trouble at all yanking it around. I have reconsidered and think that a 1953 Thunderbird paint scheme would look really kewl on it!

The Jet is almost ready to paint the color. It has gained 6 oz from bare wood to primer. I am going to try to sand off at least another ounce maybe 2. The color coats and clear will be 4 more. Putting it at 63 ready to fly 65 on the outside. If this plane does as good as I think it will I will build a another with different construction techniques.

Robert,

I'm sorry I can't find a good enough picture of an old Tunderbird airplane. Just use the scheme from the current F-16's would be fine and not terribly different that the older planes.

Yea, I keep my planes in racks well about the work area but still have to take them down and dust them after I paint.

Yes that's something like it. Except that's an F-100 used from '57 to around 1961 I think? Do you know if the 100's had the black T-Bird wing painted on the bottom of the airplane wing??

That wold be a good one though..

The Jet is now ready to paint. I will start doing so Saturday. Paint scheme is still up in the air. Base coat Gray (top) White (bottom) Red,white,blue, silver,black. To keep within my target weight I only have 4.5 oz to play with. So the paint will be very thin. I am hoping to have this done in 2 weeks.

Robert,

Just paint it how you need to in order to get it out the door! I assume this is going to
the Nats as back up to P-47 #2?
