The X47 Flyers, after much thought and discussion, have decided to offer the hosting of the King Orange International to another AMA sanctioned club. This decision was approved by a unamimous vote at today's club meeting. It has been fun to host the KOI, but after 11 years, it is time to pass the reigns to someone else.
If there is any AMA santioned club whose primary function is clpa and is capable of putting on a quality contest and would like to take over the hosting of the KOI, please get in touch with me by email at clpahodges@aol.com or at 904 797-5079. We will work with the new hosts to let them know what we know about putting on the contest, acquiring the site (if they want to use the Starke facility), contacts, etc.
If there is no other club who wants to take over the hosting duties, there is a definite possibility that there will be no KOI in 2008.

Just curious, When was the first KOI held? Seems I can recall reading about 40 years ago. Good luck in finding someone to take over the contest. After 11 years I am sure it has changed from fun to work.

The first KOI was held in 1954 and I believe it was in the Miami area.

As a kid in England in the '50's to us the KOI was a major stunt event, part of stunt folk lore. Shame if it dies.

Yeah, as a kid I used to loof forward to the coverage of the King Orange Meet, The Mirror Meet and the Nationals. Time I was old enough to go to them the Mirror Meet didn't exist anymore. The King Orange is not what it used to be. Like Carl Berryman driving all the way to Florida with a car that almost left him in Florida. My first NATS was 1964 and have missed very few of them. Oru club, The Florida Racing & Sports Flyers (charter # 4023), has been planning to put a stunt & racing contest the early part of next year. We were going to contact you to see if you were going to use the January dates.
Our club would be honored to take over the KOI & would try to put on a great contest as your club has in the past years.

We have no plans for the January date since we had moved the KOI to the end of March. Concerning the KOI, please send me an email with your club's proposal and we will discuss it at the next club meeting along with any others that we may receive.

I flew in the 1957 and the 1958 KOI Also the 1982,83,84,85,86,87,88,89-1990,91,92,93. Also 1996,97,98,99,2000,2001,2002 ,2003,2004. In the 60,70;s they had FF and I flew in some of those also. Seems like one year 1968 it was a Sebring. It would be a shame to see it gone.

I am quite pleased that the KOI has been picked up by another Florida club. Here is one of my favorite pictures of the KOI. I think this was the '97 KOI, could have been '98 also.

Folks, I think some people are jumping the gun here. All we did was offer the hosting of the KOI to other qualified clubs to see if anyone was interested. We have had two responses. Both of these will be reviewed at our August meeting and then we will first decide if we are going to give up the hosting of the KOI and if we do decide to do that, then we will decide on which group to turn it over to. There is a possibility that we will continue to host the contest.
No decision has been made at this time and will not be made prior to our August meeting.

I guess that a club offering to take over the KOI that's not primarily CLPA is a no-go then?

The original post was intended to see if there were any other clubs who might be interested in hosting the KOI. Sorry if you took it to mean something else.
So far we have had two responses. One from Gene Martine and one form a group known as the P47 Flyers (no person's name included on the email that I received). Both have been sent email requests for addtional information and so far neither has responded. I also believe that we may have a new proposal from within our own group.
Your last question will have to be answered by the club membership, not just me. The club will consider all responses, but our original post did clearly state a club whose primay function is clpa.

Gee Bill,
I'm afaid I'd have to go along with Jim on this issue. Your original post sounded very final about "passing the reins" to another club and "in a unanimous decision by our club members".
Now your attitude has changed and seems to be "maybe" and we will see!
It's easy to see why someone considering answering your post might be a little "upset".

If anyone wishes to speak to me about this, my phone number was put in the original post. Feel free to call. I do not intend to get into an ongoing discussion on the matter on this forum.
Like I said, a decision by our club, not me, will be made at our meeting in August (on the 7th, to be exact). I or someone else from the X47 Flyers will post that decision on the forums just as soon as it is made. All of the groups who have responded will also be contacted with that decision.

Not "griping, flaming, or otherwise", but the wording of your original post led to a natural, implied, conclusion that your club was not going to host the KOI anymore. Reading it left no other conclusion. Key words/phrases such as turning over the reigns, unanimous vote, If there is no other club who wants to take over the hosting duties, there is a definite possibility that there will be no KOI in 2008.
I, myself, had no doubt that you were announcing that the X-47 Flyers were not going to host the event anymore.
So this has just been a misunderstanding and please don't be upset with the others who "misunderstood".

I am not upset with anyone. Getting upset uses up energy that I can better use in other areas. At my age, I do not have a whole lot of energy left.
