Our crystal Eagle Award for the 2019 KOI Concours Champion Trophy has arrived. Have a look at this beauty in the attachment below. The winner of the Concours Event gets the beautiful crystal Eagle trophy to keep as well as a $250.00 prize for the winner. Entry to the Concours Event is free if you have entered any other 2019 KOI event ($20 if only entering the Concours Event).
I have had a few questions about how we are running this event as it relates to AMA Rules.
The 2019 King Orange International Event is an AMA Sanctioned Event (#7710). Wayne worked with Tony Stillman from AMA to make sure we get the correct designation for the magazine listing. From what I can gather, this contest will not technically be held using "AMA Rules", but will have deviations and thus run under "CD Rules".
This is because:
1. We have no AMA "Builder of the Model" rule for flight scores, any aircraft may enter.
The AMA Builder of the Model Rule - some may at first surmise Wayne & I are not fans of the BOM, but nothing could be further from the truth. The Builder of the Model rule makes our event one of the most unique among model aircraft sporting events and we both like it very much. Wayne and I are typically scratch builders, so the BOM is no hurdle for us. Just because we like the BOM, that doesn't mean it is the best choice for every contest.
The King Orange International is held in Florida - we are one of the "four corners" of the continental U.S. and as such, we have a lot harder time drawing contestants from across the country than some other states. For this primary reason, we have dispensed with the BOM as far as flight scores are concerned so we can maximize the number of flyers who can attend. We even have a few Expert aircraft that pilots can borrow for the Expert event for those it may help attend. Again, this is done simply to maximize the number of flyers. If you have a take apart aircraft such as a Yatshenko or Blue Max, bring it on down - there will be no flight score penalty because you did not build the aircraft. Again - we want to determine who is the best FLYER in each event at this years KOI.
Just as an aside, no contest I know of now follows the original Builder of the Model Rule as defined by AMA back in the day when I first started at 8 years old. For me, a Builder of the Model is just that, someone who builds the entire model from start to finish, always will be IMHO I guess. One did not really have a choice in those days, you either scratch built or built from a kit. Now we have pre-fabricated structures, who applies the finish for some structures, take apart hardware must be installed by the pilot, control system installation, underlayment rules, ARC's and ARF's and all the rest.
I actually agree with all these new definitions simply from the point we have a lot of people who provide necessary equipment and support for all the precision aerobatic pilots. These vendors rely on these new rules to stay in business. All organizations must change to keep up with the times or they will perish. There are thousands of examples of businesses out there who are no longer with us simply because they would not look to the future and embrace it. I guess it is just natural for we humans to be nostalgic for the simpler times and I guess that is what I feel. As nostalgic as I may feel, I still recognize the need to stay up with the times and applaud PAMPA for all their hard work putting all this together so we can still have a great sporting event.
I have attached the scoresheet for our rendition of the BOM and appearance scoring we will use for the Concours event at KOI 2019. These scores have NO EFFECT on flight scores, Concours is a stand alone event.
2. Pilots will have three (3) attempts for two official flight scores, with both official flights counting towards the pilots final score. A different set of judges is used for the second official flight.
While this is "technically" a deviation from AMA Rules, the U.S Nationals use this form of scorekeeping for Open Stunt. On qualifying Wednesday, you fly twice before one set of judges. Thursday you fly twice before another set of judges. Each day, you take your best official flight from each set of judges and those best score from each set of judges are added together to give you your qualifying score. If your qualifying score is within the top twenty qualifying scores, you qualify for Top Twenty day.
We like this system of scoring because a.) you can't have just one great flight score and win the event while your other best score before the other set of judges was a stinker. Consistency should be rewarded. b.) You don't almost totally eliminate one set of judges scores. At most every contest I have been at where two sets of judges are used, one set of judges always scores slightly higher on average. With only one score counting, it almost eliminates the low scoring set of judges from having any effect on the outcome. We also think it is better to have scores from four judges than two. On Top Twenty day at the U.S. Nats, this EXACT scoring system is used - there are two sets of judges - pilots will have three (3) attempts for two official flight scores, with both official flights (one from each set of judges) added together for the pilots final score. If you are in the top five qualifying scores, you move on to Top Five day where the National Champion is crowned.
3. Appearance points will not be awarded to flight scores - the flying portion of our event is just that, who is the best pilot? We have a separate event just for aircraft appearance, the Concours. While some other contests have no BOM, they might still award appearance points to the flight scores. We have decided we want to have a separate event just for appearance and the Builder of the Model. We are not suggesting any other contest, PAMPA or AMA consider adopting this format. An AMA CD has a lot of discretion about how they want to run their contest. Wayne is the CD and I am the Assistant CD and this is just how we want to run the 2019 King Orange event. It is nothing more than that.
Our main purpose is to make the King Orange International contest an event fellow precision aerobatic pilots want to attend. If people are to travel all this way, we also feel the KOI needs to be run a bit different than the average format.
We are looking for some Concours judges - where are you Jim Lynch and Charlie Reeves? While it would be our pleasure to have either of those gentleman do our Concours scoring, there are many qualified individuals who would fit the bill. Please consider coming to judge the King Orange International Concours event. You can contact Wayne Smith at kamwns@verizon.net
We hope to see you there on September 13th, 14th and 15th. The Concours event is on Saturday the 14th at 5:00PM followed by the Bar-B-Q Buffet as soon as you turn your plane in for Concours judging. Trophy and cash prize awarded after judging.

Howdy! I like what you’ve put together. I would like to ask a question though. Hypothetically .... if someone takes an old kit and replaces the old wood parts with new wood parts how would that be classified .... scratch built or kit built?
-
Hi Jim,
I knew I could count on you to come up with some weird scenario :)
I am not the CD, but I guess it would depend a bit on how much of the wood from the kit is actually replaced?
All of it and I am sure it would be considered scratch built (even scratch builders use templates).
If only part of the wood is replaced, then I would lean to kit built. My opinion would be scratch built is scratch built. You can make your case to the CD (my brother Wayne) directly kamwns@verizon.net if you like. Again, that is not my decision, but I am sure Wayne can set you straight.
Lol . . . perhaps I should change my mind, at least you are being honest - nah, never mind - rules are rules.
Hope to see you at Stunt Camp this year !!
