Minnepolis Piston Poppers Race Day and Fly
« on: June 21, 2014, 09:05:37 PM »
I arrived there as they were flying and racing. I don't know the results but it was nice to see folks out on a swell day.
Got to fly a bit after the races.
Patterns were flown and the learning curve continues.

Just got off the phone with Keith, sounds like it was a good day out there today. Hoping to catch up with all of you next Sunday...

It sure was a short but great day. I studied Keith's arm movement and hand today. Very relaxed and smooth. He has been helpful to me as well.
Hoping to get out tomorrow....

BTW, just a clarification here Shug, Keith's camo plane is a P-47, not a P-40. It started out as a Brodak ARC T-Rex but was about 80% rebuilt (structurally as well as cosmetically) into a semi-scale P-47 Thunderbolt. Power is a Saito .62.

Here's a bunch of info on it...

Hey Shug, be alert and aware those racing gents will probably try to get you on the handle or on the messy end of the lines.   Great shot of Keith's plane in inverted position.

Race results for Saturday's 2nd in the series (officially called Super Slow Rat Racing):

Pilot / mechanic

1st - Bob Cheney / Jeff Lange
2nd - Tony Kubes / Keith Sandberg
3rd - Steve Scott / Ivars Greizins

It was a highly competitive and tight contest with Bob/Jeff just eking out Tony/Keith.  Only some superlative pitting by Jeff was the difference.

I was pressed into action when Ivars put out a last minute call for his pilot.  I hadn't held a handle in several years but volunteered and Ivars accepted.  We didn't finish that far behind.  Had we a better fuel pump/bulb, it would have helped.

Saturday was a glorious day for flying (and we've had a dearth of flyable days here this spring) - bright, sunny and calm winds.
