Got the Chief in the air today for it's maiden flight. Always a thrill to maiden.
Normally this older plane design had an Native American theme but my Dad was a Navy Chief for 27 years so I designed the paint scheme in his memory.
I did not build this plane. It was given to me by Keith Sandberg after it was given to him after being pulled from the rafters. It was all built and covered in silkspan but not finished. So I finished it.
This was my first full stunter paint job and clear coat and man did I learn a lot doing it. It takes time!
It was a smooth flyer and a thrill to get it in the air.
OS .46LA engine for power. 60" .015 lines. 19 strand. Cabled handle.

Awright, the Chief flies! Nice looking job, Shug, that's one to be proud of, dedicated to your dad and reworked by you. Thanks for letting us watch you work on it, and now maidening it. I guess it's maiden time all over the northern hemisphere now. Yours and mine anyway. I hope some others will report on theirs.
If you told us, I missed it, is your Dad still living? Dooga, didn't you say that was what he called you as a kid? Mine called me Rastus and my sister Hortense Lol. I didn't know till recently that "Rastus" is an archaic racial epithet. He's gone now, since I was 16. But he was with me to launch my Cox Stuka on that first flight too. I still have the yellow spinner from it. He was a Navy guy. WW-II, South Pacific.

Looks real nice Sean, I like the red and black together, kind of an art deco look.

I envy the flyers down South or anywhere that you can get a flight in. It is approaching mid April with no chance to get a flight in. High winds, cold and lots of rainy or snowy days have made that impossible.
I hate to think that the first meet that I go to will have to be my first flight of the season but it sure doesn't look good for the near future here.

So will this be your OTS plane? Or is it OTS legal?
On a side note. Planning a hammock trip with my boys in a few weeks with a little flying at the tail end. #^

My Dad died in 1975 when I was a high school senior. Couda used him from time to time but feel him a lot.
Rastus....too funny. We do cherish those Dad pet monikers.

Thanks Jim. I decided to keep it kinda plain and clean. I'm happy for a first real paint job and scheme.

It sure is. I need to work on OTS pattern now and really learn it.

Shug, the Chief looks great in the air and on the ground. I can see the showman in the videos from you. At the end of watching on YouTube your video came up about dry baking. I'm going to have to set my foot down and get some speakers or head set. Sure made me hungry watching that. Wonder if they allow camping at the Polk City contest site? I plan on being there this year instead of Brodaks. Check the events section. Maybe see you there to fly Old Time. Also glad you have a way of honoring your Dad. My Dad had too many kids for WW I and was too old they said for WW II. He served home guard I think they called it. He lacked two weeks making 70 and I was only 20 at the time.

Being a retired US Navy Chief, I found some decals for the Fighting Chiefs Fighter Squadron, VF-2, off the USS Lexington, CV-2. Similar to the emblem you used. First chance recover it and paint it Navy blue and Gold. H^^ LL~ LL~ LL~
I did not have any blue or gold piant......so, a case of artistic license. My Dad had a black and red jacket that I admired.
I asked my Dad once what Chiefs do...he answered "Chief stuff".

Maidens and Damsels. Maidens are usually unmarried and untethered. Same with Damsels.
