As most of you know, the last date for the Brodak Fly-In is June, 2016. :'(
Last Saturday at the Huntersville event, it was announced that the Fly-In would continue after the 2016 Carmichaels event. #^
The new location? We were told that it would be in Julian, NC, around 15 miles southeast of Greensboro.
I spoke with John yesterday and he did indeed confirm it. y1 ~>
No date as yet but I would see no reason to change the dates.
I'm sure there will be more info coming, hopefully in the next Control Line World.
Is this great news or what?

Not for lack of desire, but I've yet to ever make the 929 mile one way trip out to Brodak. Now it'll only be 1132 miles one way. D>K
-
Well ya better start making plans now Wayne, you'll meet some great folks there in NC ...
Dennis
PS: OK, what's the scoop on the change of location?
-
One huge advantage to the new location is there are a lot of motels close to the event.
-
Someone else has a backyard with 6 flying circles? Amazing!!
-
People have driven a lot farther....Brazil, South Africa.
-
In the late 1970's there was the USA Control line Championships (AAAA) it was the biggest control line event of the year
May times out drawing the NATS in North Carolina

LL~ How'dey do 'dat Willis .... drive from South Africa, that is??? LL~ Now that would be one heck of a "left" turn!! LL~

Hopefully they have full paved flying circles for the CL scale pilots, that location is still a 2 day drive for me from St Louis
Did John say what club locally would be sponsoring the contest? And where the flying site is located?

Here is some information on the proposed flying site: http://oldjulianairport.org/

It will certainly be lot closer for me from Miami.
-
Around SIX hours closer!
Bob.
-
that should be about 4 hours shorter for me. Looks like a nice site!
-
Around 4 1/2 hours for you, Steve.

83.7 miles from my front door. I can handle that if I am still fly model aircraft by them. I believe they are going to do a update to the flying area to accommodate CL flying. I did a CL demo there a few years ago.
-
Bob,
That is great news. Brodak's is 1,462 miles from my front door in Colorado. The new locations is just 160 miles farther, so I can live with that. Based on my experience at Brodak's last year, the trip is worth it!

I traveled from Iraq to the Sig contest in Iowa in 2006. Flew from Taji, to BIAP, to Ali Al Saleem AB, to DFW, then to St Louis, jumped right into the car and drove up to Montezuma. Fortunately, models were already on site H^^

So, do you think they'll have a fully equipped workshop that everyone is invited to use for whatever they need... And a manufacturing facility with craftsmen that will build for you, on request, a tank or other custom part you desperately need for your next flight and hand it to you with a smile and wish you luck?
That's what I've heard about the event at John's house. I've unfortunately never been able to make the trip to PA, but this seems too unique to duplicate. That being said, Julian is close enough for me to attend on a weekend, and I have no doubt it will be a wonderful experience. Kind of like the October Carolina Criterium on serious roids. I sure look forward to it and will definitely come.

They had some problem with flooding the engine.

The flying site at Julian, NC looks pretty good.
My big worry is the Friday Night Banquet. Buzz Brodak and the ladies from John's supermarket cannot possibly be equaled ;D

A couple of thoughts. I hope the participation is as high! I will not expect to have ALL the amenities that come with being at John's home. It is maybe an hour and a half from my house which is GREAT! Maybe they will go back to the 3-4 day schedule and not having to be there for a week if you want to fly a few events.
All in all I am very grateful to those who are taking this task to heart and wish them all the best! Iy might not equal John's Fly-Ins, but give it time and support the event!

That's about my expectation too, Bill. I was also there when the guy announced it. In fact the questions I posed above were from Bob's description of John's event, while a few of us were talking over dinner Saturday night. And my other expectation is TO MEET YOU! ;D Finally, in person.

20 Brodak Fly In's?
So where does that stack up against other long-running majors?
Plymouth Internats -5
AMA Navy Nats - 15
AMA traveling Nats - 20?
AMA Muncie Nats - 20?
Sig at Montezuma ?
I didn't look this up. I'm sure plenty of people will weigh in with accurate numbers.
Anyway, The Brodak was a long-running major CL event.
