Title: That was a first for me 😳
Post by: Paul Taylor on May 27, 2015, 08:13:16 PM
Got to pratice a little this afternoon for the Family Reunion contest in June. It was my last flight and the sun was setting. The air was dead so I was walking back on the insides. Got to the outside squares and when I turn the corner to start the second square the plane hit the wake and rolled so I saw the entire bottom and the lines went slack! No control. I thought well this it end of this plane. Then about 6 ft off the ground I caught it and hit full down and turned it upward. I thought well never did that move before. 😳
I was done flying!!!!

Ha! Yeah, it's good to be able to recognize those subtle signs that it's time to roll 'em up for the day.

Dead air turbulance created by a model is often very treacherous. I've seen a number of models go in because of that. Including models flown by accomplished pilots. Great you managed to save it.

Hi Paul,

You were backing up on those outsides, too, right?  Either way, I am happy you saved the model!

How about this:  The wind was coming from 16 different directions all at once! (well at least it feels that way at Huntersville sometimes! LOL!!) And it was my last official flight.  About 1/2 way through the model did a perfect knife edge right in front of the judges for about 1/4 lap.  Never lost line tension!  When the model got about 1/4 lap it just slammed back down to wings level.  Only the second time I have ever been able to read the model's name and my AMA number in flight! LOL!!
(I thought I should have gotten extra points for that!)

Yea Rusty.  It was time to pack up.

Hey Bill I would have given you 40 points for that! 😉 but to answer the question I was not backing up on the squares. Another lesson learned.

Maybe we should start bringing a big ass fan to the field. 😄

Stunt flying is hard!
