Thanks, everyone, for "axing"...but I don't do facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or any of those other sites. Just no time for any of that stuff.
Nor do I have a Smart Phone, iPad, iPhone....or anything except this ancient desktop computer.
If (that is: "when") it quits, then I'm done. Am just too old to play catch-up with all this newfangled technology --- which instantly becomes obsolete when the next "miracle" widget hits the market.
Nothing wrong with postage stamps and telephones if you really need to reach me.

I closed all my facebook twitter linked in and the rest of them after I found out about all the spying going on.

Couldn't agree more. I just can't be bothered with any of that stuff, and it's not as though I'm an IT illiterate - I spent the last ten years of my working life as a senior system designer. By the way, they can keep Windows 10 - I'd go back to XP like a shot if the practicalities allowed.

As a 77 year old Grandpa I do not have any of the things that Mike doesn't have nor do I do any of that other stuff! I have a pay as you go phone for PHONING although I have taken a picture or two with it! My life progresses just fine with only the usual complaints!

I have facebook, smart phone, and stuff,, its the most practical way to stay in touch with my kids,, grand kids, and extended family. not a lot of postage stamps being used in my house,,
( well except for mailing off those dang bill payments)
that said,, I watched my dad struggle to come to grips and understand the frustration,, so to each their own

Actually you can order your bank to make a payment for you on line the same as ordering your bank to make a payment with a paper check through the US postal system. On line banking and "bill pay" is a great time saver for me.

Get a Mac, then you won't have to think about it too much.
I am not signed up for any of the "social media" services. As recent events prove, human interaction usually doesn't work out for me. I am a borderline hermit compared to many of my co-workers. I am the "crazy old guy in the corner" now.

I killed my facebook about three years ago and don't miss it at all. I did open a new facebook to join the Navy Carrier Society group but that's the ONLY thing I use it for. I have an Instagram account but could easily live without it.
My iPhone....
No matter where I go I have a whole world of information at my fingertips. I can read restaurant reviews and make a reservation while on the road between cities I've never been to. I have a whole library of music as well personalized custom radio stations. I can land in a strange city and gps my way to the hotel. It's a fantastic camera. I can shoot and edit video. I gps map hikes and bike rides. Every phone number or email address I might need is either stored or easily found via Internet.

I have nothing to do with "social media", but I just completed my fourth computer build, and it is a barn burner. Instead of a hard drive, it uses a M.2 socket 3 SSD card that fits a special socket made for it. It is lightning fast. I have only one bug left to work out and I am in contact with ASUS about it.

I have the same $50.00 cell phone I've had for over a decade and it works must fine. Pay as you go, runs me about $23.00 a month. Got "forced' into facebook mainly because thats and text messages are about al my wife and I can get the grandkids to do!

Got hooked on digital stuff way back in 1973 as a Army Artilleryman (13B Field Artillery) when they needed bodies in the Fire Direction Center (FDC). I received On the job training with an M18: FADAC (Field Artillery Digital Automatic Computer) and that led me to build a Timex Sinclair from a Compute magazine article around 1975. Later had a Vic 20, Commodor 64, and eventually a IBM clone 8088 12Mhz machine with a whooping 1Meg of RAM (640K addressable) running MS Dos 3.2. I took college courses in COBOL and MS Basic. Later as a Staff sergeant in Aviation I managed to use a computer to create a database of my entire aviation parts stockage a few years before the Army provided us with small computers. I also automated the monthly 10% tool inventory that was a nightmare for us mechanics.
At age 60 I personally have a face book presence but never update "what the hell is Fred up to" stuff....like many of us it is for seeing what the other younger family members are posting
I do not know how I ever got along without this smart phone, or on line banking, or Navigation. Have not bought a Rand McNally map set in over 15 years
The greatest boon to me- living out in the sticks (even with a terrible bandwidth connection) are these internet forums and cottage folk web sites.
There is absolutely no way I could have gotten back in the modeling passion of my youth with only the local resources and Tower Hobby to rely on.
Just got my first semi luxury auto a Lincoln MKC and all the infotainment stuff works well. I like Fords new Sync3, paired to my smart phone and actual working voice recognition I am much more comfy and safe zooming around Texas trying to find a group to play airplane with

I use all of the above (facebook, twitter, smart phone) with great effect. It makes my life better. It keeps me in contact with my family, kids and friends around the world and ex co workers.
I choose what I post, read and believe what I want to. Stay away from controversy, avoid trolls.
I ignore the politics and unfriend or block the ranting idiots. ( Peabody)
I work to keep the signal to noise level positive.
I keep my exposure of personal info to a calculated minimum.
Funny one would post anti tech views on an electronic forum.
Oh yes RC park fliers, and RC planes with cameras are fun too.

My wife and I both have our old flip phones. I am on an old XP tiny laptop that works most of the time. After being retired for 10 years I find my money does not go as far as it use to. But, I have my Lazy Boy and my old Harley that still has a carburetor. For the most part I am pretty content with what I have and do not need anymore frustrations in my life with more technogeek stuff. I use my phone to call my wife when I am either out on the bike or in the grocery store with a question about the list, or when we are shopping and I can't find her. LOL
Yes! I am a geezer also. The bad part is I don't care. I love the line by someone on here I think. My wife and I started out 56 years ago with nothing and we still have most of it.
Technology is great but it gets obsolete so fast by the time I figure it out its all changed again. I remain behind the curve. Guess that is why I love Old Time Stunt with ignition engines, and Old Time free flight with ignition engines. Old stuff never gets obsolete. It just becomes antique or classic. Can't decide which I am.

I guess I'm somewhere in between on this discussion.
I enjoy Forums that have a centered interest for me. In other words ones that have other people that share a strong common interest like a CL modeling forum.
I used to have a facebook account but got rid of it because I realized that other than some modeling friends and family members, I really had little or nothing in common with a lot of the people that came there just to argue about things they knew little to nothing about or to espouse about how wonderful the liberal government was and what wonderful things it was doing!!!
Being a nasty old (emphasize OLD) conservative ex-military curmudgeon I quickly tired of that and started blocking everyone that I didn't like. Very soon I realized that the only folks there that I had anything in common with were the modeling friends and family members that I had contact with anyway through other media.
So, like a true curmudgeon I dumped facebook and am much happier without it!
I have no problem with technology just some of the people that use it... LL~ LL~
As a retired engineer of nearly 50 years I grew up with most of the technology we enjoy and even helped bring some of it to light...Some of it is not so enjoyable and is simply more efficient ways of killing people, which unfortunately has it's place in any society as some people need killing from time to time. It isn't pleasant to think about however.
Anyway, technology isn't to blame for the evils of the world only some of the people that use it and or abuse it!

I'd like to express my view on one topic ... facebook. I'm pretty well tech-connected, but about a year and a half ago, I almost deleted my facebook account. Between political views, or simply a hard line view of anything, was a constant barrage on a daily basis. For some reason, THEIR version of facebook is nothing more than a pedestial to slam their view on any topic. I was so sick of it, and to be honest, have lost a couple friendships over the years.
I didn't delete it ... I re-taylored it. Obnoxious friends became acquaintances .... a couple got deleted. Groups that propogate and forward untruths were blocked.
But the end reason I didn't delete was for two reasons .... family and special interest groups.
My wife and I live 1600miles away from 90% of our families. facebook is an absolutely wonderful way of staying in touch with those family members that we don't see. You have no idea how much our families adore the pictures we post of our 2 year old grandson .... swimming in our pool, him visiting me down the C/L circle, his first camping trip we took him on ... it's endless and priceless to be able to share. And it works the other way too. I'm connected with nieces, nephews and cousins that I probably would have lost touch with.
The other reason .... my special interest groups. I have several, but I'll only touch on C/L. "Control Line Enthusiasts" .... outstanding facebook page. I see stuff here from all over the world, and the group is very active. I see plane designs and engine types that are incredible. Just recently, there was championship in Sweden, I think. Updates everyday ... and hundreds of pics and videos.
"Philly Fliers" .... another great facebook page, and I'm sure some of you reading this are members! I see stuff on their page that I don't see anywhere else ... not even here. They have a great time over there, and looks like a fabulous group of people. They're are new posts and pictures on the happenings every day.
"Alberta Control Line Flying Club" -- Again .... info, posts, pics, vids of things I don't see anywhere else. Another great page and a group of guys having a blast.
"Navy Carrier Society" -- Yup, them too. Regular updates, posts and pics.
Theres a few other C/L groups ...as well as my special interest in airgunning, and R/C nitro boats.
So, what I'm saying is ... if you taylor it ... facebook can be wonderful with tons of info that you don't see anywhere else.
You guys that feel you don't need facebook, because you've never had it and aren't missing anything .... well, you ARE missing it. It's a great tool that has any number of different ways to provide you with what to see ... and what not to. Using the tools facebook provides can weed out everything except what you want to see, and what people can see of you .... not at all if you so desire.

I have to confess. My wife is on facebook as we have two of our sons one on each coast. One in Florida and one in Sacramento bay area. My wife keeps me up to date with pictures and notes from what is going on with them and others. So, yeah, it is a nice tool for that. We also skype with them sometimes just for fun. It keeps us close when they are so far away. 2 years ago they were all with in 160 miles of us. One thing we can depend on is change. Even though Mike and I don't like it.

Mike , I find a lot of the magic is overrated. My Iphone is a piece & I'll toss it next week for a prepaid Kroger special. My laptop is Win7 I ordered it that way... never had facebook or any of that junk,, I prefer my privacy. My kids work in the high tech industry & when I need help I useally fix it myself.

As far as I can tell, facebook is almost entirely pictures and videos of dogs and cats wearing funny hats. A bit of political dingbattery and syrupy inspirational stuff, but mostly just the pets with the hats.
Twitter is where D-list celebrities get to share their every profound thought with a breathlessly-awaiting world. Their profound thoughts only require a maximum of 140 characters, hence the limit. When having profound thoughts makes them tired, they can instead post a 'selfie' on Instagram. (A selfie is where you make a face like a duck into a mirror, and take a photo of yourself.)
LinkedIn is a type of virus which tries to make you network with thrusty upwardly-mobile investment analysts and online marketing executives. As such, its main function is as a form of court-ordered punishment for low-grade felonies.
And that's really all you need to know about social media.

I just replaced my old Commode 64 with a new American Standard that will swallow 12 golf balls at a time. And I can't think of a better use for golf balls. But I always say that I might take up golf when/if I turn 80.
Tomorrow night, there will be a family meeting about cell phones and our family plan. Not sure if I'll be able to keep my flip-phone, but I hope so! y1 Steve

We'll never outlive the pace of technology. It's just a decision as to whether you want to leverage it to your benefit or not. I don't use facebook, Twitter or all the other "social networking" stuff but on the other hand, spending alot of time overseas, Skype has been a life (and budget) saver. No more $500 phone bills keeping in touch with my wife and children.
This forum got me back into flying and connected me with my club, NACA, in Huntsville.

As a guy that frequently starts my work day at hours between midnight and 6am, I liked when I had a flip phone.
Occasionally, a co worker would make fun of it, until I mentioned the time that he or she "butt dialed" me before that....
Pros and cons, baby. For almost everything.

If I feel like talking to someone, I use my ham radio equipment. At least, my ham friends and I have a common interest.

Hey! That's exactly like mine...a Verizon LG. Works just fine!
I do have one buddy who insists on sending me text messages all the time and the telephone keyboard is tough to operate for that.
But He's a longtime friend from our childhood so I have learned to operate it fairly well. Pain in the Butt!

I even have texting BLOCKED on my flip-phone. Verizon had been sending me ad messages, and charging me 20 cents per. Since I don't text, or wish to be charged for that, had them kill the option on the phone. A local friend once said, "Hey, I sent you a text", and I had to tell him why I didn't receive it.
Every time you turn around, these techie outfits are trying to get into your wallet.
Retired and living solely on Social Security, every penny counts!

Had the same problem with my Sprint phone, Mike.
Charge you for every text message received and then blast you with their in-house advertising text messages to make sure you get a lot of text messages they can charge you for!
What a SCAM!

A hash tag is the # symbol. it is placed in a post to allow the next word to show up in a keyword search.
So you use it if you are writing something on twitter about an event or-thing you may want someone to find it. #control-line
While social media is full of B list celebrities, and C list nobodys trying to be interesting, it isn't hard to block or ignore that and get only what you want out of it.
No one forces you to follow Kim. Block her fat A$$ as i did.
I use twitter to follow Notre Dame Football and game day traffic in south bend when we go to a game. Not much else, but it works very well for that. The Indiana state police do a nice job pushing out weather related issues and traffic info.
I use facebook to keep track of friends and promote our club. It helps and there are a lot of good control line people in facebook all around the world. You non participants are missing it. I stay away from anything controversial, political and I block people that do. Ends up with a simple hassle free existence there. Yes even control line people are out of control on facebook, but it is easy to block them. I have blocked some of my family and friends due to the way they act on facebook.
You, the user are the master of the content, not the other way around. Social media is set up to let you filter out the crap not force you to look at it.
So I encourage all of you to try social media and blame the idiots on it, not the technology. Take control.
Get it to work for you, the way you want, not just bitch about it. It isn't that hard. You might be surprised if you were not so negative.
Oh and an electronic forum IS considered social media, sorry guys....

When your grouped into some organization because Achmed is a Friend of a Friend of some friend you have invited to your circle they don't care.
Once I researched the depth of the problem of this all of my accounts were closed. Why do you think that tag a image of a friend is on facebook?

* - I occasionally do some scambaiting. I LOVE to get those 'Windows Technical Department' scammers on the land-line to see how long I can keep them occupied and how frustrated I can get them. >:D

About a month ago I finished a bundle of bank checks that was started in 2011.
Can't remember when I last ordered checks.
To me they seem insecure having the routing and account numbers on them.

When I cross the border into Canada, I get at least a couple of text messages that tell me that I can continue to use my phone, and will be using "Shaw Network", I think it is. I don't use my cell phone in Canada, but would if it was an emergency, of course. I have been wondering if I get charged, and probably should just turn it off before I cross the border. Yet, it's not which side you are on, but which side the cell tower is.
If you like having fun with the phoney "Windows Technician" calls, ask them what you need to do to fix the damned thing. They'll tell you to push a couple of butons...I don't recall which. DON'T! But tell them you did. They'll ask what you see on the screen. Say "Nothing, just a blue screen." They'll get all crazy and jibber-jabber in the background. Play them along, telling them that you did what they said, and maybe say it locked up your computer, and you'll have to re-boot, etc. Lots of fun. The important thing is to not do whatever they say to do, but tell them you did just what they said, and then yell at them for *******-up your computer, and shout something about their parentage, and maybe, just maybe they'll quit calling! ;D Steve

A hash tag is the # symbol. it is placed in a post to allow the next word to show up in a keyword search.
So you use it if you are writing something on twitter about an event or-thing you may want someone to find it. #control-line
While social media is full of B list celebrities, and C list nobodys trying to be interesting, it isn't hard to block or ignore that and get only what you want out of it.
No one forces you to follow Kim. Block her fat A$$ as i did.
I use twitter to follow Notre Dame Football and game day traffic in south bend when we go to a game. Not much else, but it works very well for that. The Indiana state police do a nice job pushing out weather related issues and traffic info.
I use facebook to keep track of friends and promote our club. It helps and there are a lot of good control line people in facebook all around the world. You non participants are missing it. I stay away from anything controversial, political and I block people that do. Ends up with a simple hassle free existence there. Yes even control line people are out of control on facebook, but it is easy to block them. I have blocked some of my family and friends due to the way they act on facebook.
You, the user are the master of the content, not the other way around. Social media is set up to let you filter out the crap not force you to look at it.
So I encourage all of you to try social media and blame the idiots on it, not the technology. Take control.
Get it to work for you, the way you want, not just bitch about it. It isn't that hard. You might be surprised if you were not so negative.
Oh and an electronic forum IS considered social media, sorry guys....
