I have a Testors McCoy .29 engine which I acquired from a relative. It is new in the box, and has never been run. I was thinking about using it on a Brodak Super Clown to get back started in control line. I am not familiar with this engine, all of my experience has been with the old McCoy red head engines or Fox 35s. What do you think?

If you have the odd "square" one, it's a better runner than its truly strange looks seem to indicate. The metallurgy is still anchored in Red Head territory, however, with its steel cylinder, so you'll need a high oil content fuel, same as for a red Head. I would consider it on the heavy side of the range for a Super Clown, however. My favorite engine in those was one or another .19, like the GH Torp, or the Veco 19 BB, or the old Max III 19 from OS.

If it is a pre redhead model, it's a good engine, but low on power.

If your engine is a Testors McCoy Series "21" it was probably made in the 1960's - 1970's period. These engines feature a "Dykes" piston ring. I have one each of the Series 21 engines. .19, .29, .35 & .40. I've used all of them on airplanes and they perform reasonably well. They are on the heavy side and run best (for me) on all castor fuel. 25% seems about right. They aren't set up for a muffler and strap on mufflers can cause over heating.
That being said, an OS .25 might be a better choice for your Super Clown. That engine is quite a bit lighter than the Series 21 and offers better, more user friendly performance, in my opinion.

What Joe said. (Ya can't beat the LA25 in that size ship, IMHO.)

Email John Wright, he has a lot of experience with the Testors McCoy series engines and really likes them. They are a good running engine, although they are just a bit heavy (John has the fix for that.)
