Title: Test flight on the TRIPLE!
Post by: Robert Zambelli on July 23, 2014, 06:52:01 PM
A few years back, I built a three-engine experimental stunt plane. Just out of curiosity, nothing else.
I flew it back then, had some issues. Corrected the problems but lost interest.

Anyhow, I did a flight last week just to see how it flew and what trim it might need.
Turn outs, it's a bit nose heavy but it didn't do too badly.
I'm not all that pleased with the three Surpass 26s - very inconsistent.
Three SAITO 30s will be in place soon.

It sounds neat, though.

That is a right goodie there. Love to feel the pull of that plane. And yes, the sound was incredible.

How long were those lines, and how much weight transfer did it feel like? Thanks, Greatly enjoyed that! H^^

Hi, Guys - thanks for the compliments.

The lines, plane and handle measure out to 69 1/2 feet, fuselage to handle center line.
The pull is actually not that bad - no more than a Cardinal or Strega.

As soon as practical, I will install three SAITO 30s as I prefer them to the Surpass engines.
Also, I designed the plane such that it can easily convert to a taildragger. That should shift the CG back a bit since since it is noseheavy.
The dry weight, by the way, is just over 80 ounces.

As of right now, it has half-span flaps. In about five minutes, I can convert to full-span.

Robert - how to I accomplish the "share" feature?

I forgot all about this design of yours.  Looks great in the air.  Have no sound but I bet those 4 strokes sound great.   Took you advice on the Cardinette.   First flight in Topeka with shorter lines was a great improvement.   Had needle a little lean and it got light at top of circle.   Moved lead outs forward about a 1/4 inch and opened the needle.  I could grow to love this little plane as I did most of the pattern on the 4th flight.   Still getting used to how much fuel to inject on that little 4 stroke.

Bob....Isn't the plane in the video a test bed for the biplane canard pusher that you are building?

Do the engines have individual tanks, or a common tank for all three? Are the engines setup with venturii or stock carbs?  ??? Steve

Hi, Steve.
The plane has three separate tanks, which I top off just before launch.
Stock carbs, sealed and wired wide open.
Unfortunately, the Surpass engines are quite temperamental. When spot on, they're great (remember, the 80+ ounce plane flew with one engine!) but, as previously stated, they're not consistant. I've experienced similar problems with other Surpass engine, particularly the 40. One day, while getting ready to fly, the crankpin broke. I believe the 40 has been discontinued - could that be the reason?

I was the shaky cameraman on that flight. The long lines surprised me so I cut and ran out into the sand pit after the first low pass. It sounded like a full size plane flying over my head. It was sure fun to watch.

Bob Zambelli-all these fun and games has got to stop! You have to buckle down and start suffering like the rest of us. Long sessions of difficult practice-hour after hour of buffing and polishing your ship. Long sessions figuring out control system algorythms.

Again-too much fun. mw~

By the way what line length were you using, not that I am condoning this fun stuff mind you!!

Thanks
Of course Bob knows I am joking, as I am a 4 stroke fan and his ship has 3 of them!!

I hear Bob has lots of planes that will amaze us and amuse us. I look forward to getting him to come visit our field again, maybe join our club. I enjoyed seeing his famous Stunt Rocket fly that day too. Next time I'll be on the lookout for long lines when I man the camera. Lol That made it kinda funny though.
Here's a pic from that excursion.
Me with the Yak-9, Wayne Robinson, Tom Beatie, and Bob Zambelli.
