Title: teosawki drawings and templates
Post by: pipemakermike on January 05, 2016, 08:43:35 AM
I promised in 2014 that I would update the drawings and templates that I used to build my UK example.
First a picture:-

For the drawings and build pictures please go here:-

This is still a work in progress but I will finish it soon and there is already enough info for building one.

Great project, one of my favs!! Mike I believe if we could get someone to cut the foam leading edges we could limp thru the rest of the build! I would definitely build at least a couple.

Phil Cartier was the supplier of the foam leading edge.   He will sell you as many add you need.

Mike,

What a great job.  That is very very nice.

I think the problem is getting permission to kit the plane or the rights to it.

If my memory serves me correct, I think the original design was built on a jig and the man who was producing them passed away.  I could be wrong.

Clayton Smith was the designer of the Teosawki.  He passed in 2010.

With foam cores from Phil Cartier and the info that pipemakermike has compiled you should be able to make one of these planes.

Yes Clayton has passed and I could get my hands on a leading edge pretty easily but I don't want to scratch build an entire airplane. If permission could be gotten and someone was willing I think it would be easy to sell a ton of these. All the guys I know that have them aren't willing to part with them. It was just a thought. :)

pipemakermike's drawings seem to be in vector format PDF, so getting laser cut parts from them should not be a huge step.

I have DXF files of the parts and I have put them on my webpage.

Also

Because I struggled with the leading edge cutting my first example has a compromise on the leading edge:=

As I was struggling to produce a usable leading edge with the full length 1/8” slot at the front I decided to make a pair without the slot and with a 3/16” flat on the front much like the method I used for making wings for R/C models.   This simplified the cutting a great deal.  To do the joining I cut a 1/8” slot with my bandsaw  and made a shorter joining plate with 1/8” balsa and spruce.  This was glued into the front fuselage and fully filled the leading edge slot when the parts were brought together.  I trimmed the front to match the leading edge and sanded prior to paper covering the leading edge.  Another difference is that the front of the leading edge is a strip of 3/16” thick medium balsa glued on before the joining slot was cut and I am hoping that the resultant strength is sufficient and so far it appears that it is.
If/when I make another I plan to follow the leading edge cutting method shown on this youtube video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzncRLrOPVo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzncRLrOPVo)
The template drawings show what I think are the actual parts and method that Clayton used

Mikey made me do it!

That is Pipemakermike! Thank You Mike!  I wanted to step up to a larger, easy to build & repair, excellent flying plane to perfect the basic pattern that I try to fly & then learn the Full Pattern.  When Mike did his CAD post & build, I finally got started.  A Gotcha RST Streak ( great plane for the beginner & sport flier) & two Pseudo-Sakis got in the way.  I finished my Teosawki & bashed two Teosawkis in late 2015. They all fly very well & have the blessings of the local Yoda.  They all fly much better than I can.  The two I bashed fly just as well as the original; making me wonder what it would take to make one fly poorly.
I hope Matt, George & Clayton smile as much as I do when I fly anyone of these.  I do want to do one more bashed Teosawki on the order of Wild Bill's Doodle Bug.  All future builds will be done with a couple of combat style jigs  to make building quicker, accurate & easy. If I can build one from Mike's post then anyone can.  I spent the most time making sure things were lined up properly.  I fly the Teo-Master most often only because the muffler stinger makes a peculiar vibrating sound when I have the RPM right.

Thank You again Mike!  Thank You,  Phil At CoreHouse for the leading edges.

I think the problem is getting permission to kit the plane or the rights to it.

I wouldn't think that permission would be needed as the owner of any rights is no longer with us and there is no financial loss to anyone unless Clayton's heirs want to go into production
I think that I would follow the rule that it is easier to ask forgivness than permission.
Title: PERMISSION TO BUILD THE TEOSAWKI
Post by: Michael T Murray on January 07, 2016, 01:22:00 PM
Hi Mike

I spent a Saturday afternoon with Clayton Smith at his home just before he got really sick and sadly shortly thereafter he passed on us.  I did get permission from Clayton to build and kit the TEOSAWKI and redrew his drawing in AutoCAD 2010.  Be mindful of the drawing copyright on the original drawing > (Wayne Foster 2005). I called Wayne 5 or 6 years ago maybe even longer then that and at that time he was not interested in discussing the kit or the CAD file.  Such is life right?  God help us if we have to go to Federal Court for copyright infringement.  (Hell, I may be in court over a $9.49 Venturi another great story - God help me!) Clayton and I had talked for years (both of us were very sick) about the bigger version of the TEOSAWKI which was a .60 sized airplane. More bigger ... hey ... bigger plane bigger fun right. I also made a template for the tapered foam LE with spar cut-outs ... my shop is still 3 months in the making here in Tucson, AZ.  My plan was to work with Eric Rule at RSM and produce the plane with some refinements so as to design a plane with all the "as near engineering" of the original TEOSAWKI but enough outside the original drawing to circumvent the copyright infringement ... right?  God help us were in Federal Court one day over a toy airplane ... I have nicknamed my good friend Eric ... DR. RULE so as to discuss such matters and seek counsel.  Hah!  His billing rate for Stunt Hanger Psychiatric help is substantial. ($$$$$)

Roy Tranthom gave me an original TEOSAWKI when I was consulting at Piper AC at Vero Beach around 2006 or so ... awesome flying airplane for a profile.  That gift from Roy was my start back in to Controline Stunt since the 8th grade in Maryland. Very solid airplane, light weight, great slow combat wing, and with an OS LA .46 I have seen William Davis and Tommy Looper on more than one occasion smoke the field in EXPERT with their TEO's!

Here's a couple of PICs from back in day.  This TEO had been rebuilt 20 times and then was finally hangered.  Or as Eric Rule loves to remind me ... I am an EXPERT at Take-A-Part airplanes.  Hah!  8)
I just recently applied for VRE through Veterans Administration and they may buy me a 130 Watt Laser ... making these parts likes the ribs, stabs, and 1/32 or 1/64th plywood side plates is a walk in the park with a laser and less then 30 minutes of work.  Lets see if the VA is feeling magnanimous. ???

If you go forward with this even though I have kits that will probably never get built, put on the list for one.

By the way you left the periods out between the letters;  S.H.I.T. = Special High Intensity Training  . LL~ LL~ LL~

Foam leading edges are available an cheap.  Give me a call.

Actually, this is as good, and easier to build:
