Tennis & Flying Site
« on: August 23, 2006, 05:06:16 AM »
Here's one for the books- I fly at a sports complex where there is a soccer field ,Baseball diamond and some tennis courts at the far end. Yesterday one of the tennis folks approached me to request that I find a different place to fly- reason- the noise is interfering with their tennis game!!

I asked him to explain and was told that they can't hear the ball bounce or the twang when the racket smacks the ball!!!  I was speechless!! Does anyone know if hearing impaired folks play tennis?

We often fly on a soccer field in my neighborhood. There are also baseball diamonds. We were asked once to quit because the folks playing baseball didn't like the noise. We quit and came back after the game. Fields like yours and ours weren't originally intended to be shared with model flying so here at home we're careful to respect their right of folks to use the field for it's intended purpose. As a result we get along fine with all of the soccer and baseball players. And we don't have a group of citizens who complain about us and cast a negative light on model airplane flying.
It's easy to schedule flying sessions there that don't conflict with others.

Please remember.  What is music to one can be Noise to another.   I am flying my electric at  an artificial surface soccer field at 6am.

Now on the other foot. We have a model airplane field that soccer players use. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile. I have had to run them off our circle. They guy said we are playing here. I said do you have a permit to play here? He said no. I said I have a permit to fly here and this is the only place we have to fly. Soccer can be played in a school yard while flying is prohibited.

I have to agree with Robert. If you have a place designated for you to fly, you have to be ready to defend your ground, or you will soon find a sign that says no flying allowed.

tennis/airplanes/hippies and baseball

in alexandria louisiana we had one of the best flying fields ever built.

4 paved circles
a cival air patrol tower/consesion stand/headquarters.
a f-86 saber jet on display
fenced in and oak shade trees

when my dad was in high school (40s-50s)they used base ball fields to fly in.
to much complaints from baseball headed types.
my grand father(who also flew)ownend a construction co. and had the city donate a peice of land for flying in the city park across the street from tennis courts and a pavilion.  then out of his pocket he buit the field and donated it to the city.we had a fully paved 1/2a circle-a fully paved speed/stunt circle for 40 to 70 foot lines. also 1 quarter circle and one half circle.
when i was a toddler we held the state champs here.

when i was in high school(the 70s) 3 or so of my friends and i who flew(competion combat)
would every day after school go fly(pratice?)and all was good and life was fun

then the troubles started. as we also flew on saturday and sunday(and the old timers flew to) while the hippie
bands were playing rock and roll music(the pavilion) and the entire place would fill up with people partying!that was fun to.we flew while we partyed!
during the week at school we would here coments about the engine noise interfering with the music--well turn it up!
a few years later we got wind of the noise problem apparently from the tennis people and they also claimed to have tomany people playing tennis for the avalible room and they needed it for tennis courts..
the city had decided that the flying field had to go.almost no one was flying at the time and we didnt fight it hard but the city said they would build a new place for us out of town.
well-they got the new tennis courts--the players still used the old one so the city started using it to store dirt/gravel so they would have to use new site--they went to ymca and clubs instead- to this day their nice old/new site is rarely in use --

over the years i have thought about flying a combat plane on the courts just to make a point--yes i can fly a full tank out and make a good landing with only the 1/8 to 1/4 of circle thats avalible on tennis courts.

well the city build use a field(dad was the engineer)but guess what?--no one flew controle line at the time so it for r/c!

guess im back to flying in ball dimonds and socker fields!
is this why we study history?to know where we been so we know where were goin?

i do have a paved 1/4 circle here at the house (dad built it in 70s)but it has been taken over by under brush and soon will have trees on it. now that im back to C/L (i still r/c) i hope to be able to clear it and get it back in shape this fall. i went and checked the pavement and it is still perfect!
any one in louisiana or texas or anywhere is invited to help and would have use of it anytime(reasonable). i have a d-6 dpzer for the heavy/main work.

life is life!

We have a deaf girl here in England who is Nationally ranked in squash. She has to be extra observant of her opponent and what her opponent does. This entails continually looking behind herself when she is in front of the opponent. The sound of the ball on the racket and against the walls is a great help in reacting to what the opponent does with the ball, and she has to do without this aid which others take for granted.
She also has to look very carefully at the marker to lipread decisions when she asks for lets, and when the marker calls out the score at every rally.
Ian Russell.
[I can remember the schedule o.k., the problem is remembering what was the last manoeuvre I just flew!].

This is why electric power will become popular - no noise.

Yea, the noise of a tennis game or a basketball boucing annoys the !#*^ out of me. And the sound of our engines is sweet music. Heck, any airplane engine sounds good to me. When we do engine runs at work, sometimes, I remove my ear protection, and listen to all the different sounds the engine is making. There is about 7 distinct sounds I can hear from a JT-9 at take-off power. Sweet music, no kidding.

I was flying near a baseball field a few weeks ago, and the sound of the announcer was very disturbing to me. I let them go tho, didnt want them to stop playing on my account. They may have had bats, but I had APC props, they never would have stood a chance.  **)

Seriously tho, consideration for others is the best policy.
