Tempest with ST60?
« on: May 31, 2017, 06:10:05 AM »
I have the opportunity to buy a Randy Smith Tempest kit. The kit is a beauty!....and I can get it very reasonably. The box says it's for a piped 40 to 46. I don't have that set up,but do a some very nice ST 60s. Would the weight of the ST 60 spoil the performance of a plane designed for the 40-46 pipe set up? Thanks,PhillySkip

Randy can answer, but the weight of the ST 60 is probably less than the weight of the 40VF, header, and pipe, so I wouldn't worry about it on that basis.

Hi Skip

That will work just fine, there are dozens out there  with  ST  60s  flying  now, I suggest  you still  use  the  pipe formers, just do not open the bottom up, they will add a lot to the  stiffness of the fuse structure

Here's a picture of mine currently under construction.  Just about ready to begin the covering and finishing process.

Set up for PA65.

Built from one of Randy Smith's kits bought many years ago!  Great kit!

Weighs 46 oz as it sits with engine, tank, spinner, and pipe.  Should come in well under 60 oz when finished.

I saw that kit too. Looks like it was an older kit. It's nearly the same price as a new kit now.

The new kits have Carbon Fiber gear in them. If I had the money I'd just buy one of those. With all the extras that Randy puts in them you would be spending that much or more anyway.

Just my 2c...

Your right  Mark , you will spend much more buy the  kit in pieces  as  my kits are  loaded  with  goodies, and very complete
But I have many people who  buy the plans,  laser cut rib sets, cf gear  parts  etc, and  build  their  own, also  I can do the same with  foam components

Randy, if I may ask, what is the going rate on a complete kit from you? And what does it include?
