I met up with a few other guys at Brodak's Fly In last week. We were entered in the Junk Yard War event. JYW is by far the most popular event for spectators and a huge crowd gathered around the circle to see how the planes we built out of orange crates the day before would fly.
Our team accomplished some firsts with our entry.
We were;
first to do a built up wing.
first to use a throttle.
first to do touch and goes.
first to taxi a whole lap.
first to cut another teams lines.

We didn't win or even place but it sure was fun. y1

Frank,

You had to have a blast on Clancy's team.  I had the privilege of being on his team last year and I was in awe of the "Genius" of Clancy.  Maybe next year.

I liked the Food Network aprons and still have mine from last year too.

Actually we all had 'wood butchers' printed on the aprons. no butcher works without an apron, it's the uniform, don't ya know.

Paul----you're quite right-- Clancy is a great guy to work with. He's creative and his ideas take his team to high levels of achievement, but best of all he can put together a great team. Working with Clancy and John and Dennis was great.
The plane itself came out "not shabby". And it flew! Next year I won't be surprised if Clancy has morphed it into the next link in the evolution of Junk Yard Wars technology.
I would surely love to assemble the same team for next year. Ah the possibilities.................................................. #^

Frank, Dennis and Johnny
Next year I hope to have the three of you back and with the return of Jack Sheeks and Paul Taylor we should be a force to be reckoned with!

Dennis has an idea for next years build that we will make the build drawing for.

Dennis H.
Yes you were there at our club flying session when version 2 of the 4 built was test flown.  In the picture is Jack Sheeks, Dennis Holler, Steve Couch, Clancy Arnold and Bob Pardue.  Note the stunt flaps on this version!

I did not time the build but each one was done in a single day.  It takes longer to make the drawings than build the plane.

That reminds me, I had better hit the grocery store for more high grade building material while the price is right.

We need to use one piece ribs next year Clancy and 5 min epoxy and CA.
Also we need to secure the servo and battery pack better. (Screws).
Heavy sheers would cut the ribs. I have some and I'll test them on some crate wood.

I had planned to stop at the hobby shop and get some CyA and Kicker but I got involved with my other plane.  The plan was for the CyA to hold the parts together until the Gorilla Glue cured over night.

Cutting the slots for the Leading Edge, Trailing Edge and Spars would be a problem on one piece ribs unless we had a cutting die made.  Then we would only need a bench press.  HHHUUUUMMMMM!

Where are the rules for this "event"? Or, are there any?

Clancy---I did a drawing of the side view for what I have in mind for the ribs.

Garf---Maybe the Brodak web site will have the rules.

The basic rule is any 25 engine or a stock Fox 35 stunt engine.

You build the model from the material provided.  Go to your local Super Market and ask if they have any empty wood Vegetable crates they are going to throw away.  I have gotten as many as three at one time for free.

Look at the third picture in this thread for what they look like.  They are held together with Bailing Wire and Staples.
