light colors are more affected ... but the correct shade of primer is covered easier by color..

Depends on the final base color.  Yellow is the worst, it needs a fully blocking primer or base coat.  A solid white base works the best.
Medium density colors, reds, blues, greens, etc. can go over a white or light grey base.  Depends on the exact color shade you are looking for.
Dark colors are less sensitive, but a darker primer may help reduce the amount of color coat needed.

The best bet is to make a test panel to try out the color scheme, especially if you haven't tried something similar before.
