Title: Taping hinge line - over barrel hinges.
Post by: Dennis Toth on November 15, 2020, 07:21:18 AM
Working on finishing up my Rescue S1 electric Ringmaster and need to apply tape over the hinge line. When this was built the builder used medium barrel hinges (flat type that goes into a slot). They were not recessed into a hinge pocket so the gap is about 1/16". They are in very good but I need to tape the hinge line. One option is to tape between the hinges with several pieces of tape, this is a pain. The easiest is to use one piece of tape down the whole thing, I have seen others say its just fine and the hinge will not bind.

Question, if you do the one piece approach should you put something like a small drop of chain lube on the hinge area to keep the tape from sticking to the barrel?

Many do this when they install the hinge to keep the adhesive from gluing the hinge together and perhaps that's why they don't have binding when taped over.

I didn't care for the feel of the stickiness with tape over the hinge so I just tape between the hinges.  It takes a little longer but not that much.  Some might talk about the air that gets through or around the hinge but I think that minuscule and of no discernible difference.  You are still blocking 98% and that should be ample to achieve the goal.

I just use one piece of tape over the whole hinge line.  Blenderm tape is the best hinge tape I've used.

That was my theory for a long time, but, after talking to Paul Walker at some Team Trials, he said it made a difference, and I tried it, and the few little roll hitches that I had went away. Worth trying both ways. Not to mention it is about A LOT quicker.

Put oil over the barrel to keep the adhesive from sticking.

I use Windex to give me time to position the tape.  It might have also kept the tape from sticking to the hinges.  I haven't oiled the hinges, and I haven't noticed them sticking.  Maybe I haven't looked carefully.
