Ready for clear!
« on: May 29, 2011, 07:10:17 PM »
Here's the Trivial Pursuit, all ready for clear!  I figured I might as well reveal the whole plane now that it's fully painted.  Now it just needs two coats of urethane, and have it put together and start flying it!  #^ #^ #^

Thanks Paul,

Yes there is some Windy Influence in this plane (hence the canopy treatment, and the lamborghini on the rudder, kinda like a windy thing except not a ferrari)

Matt,  you are way ahead of most guys/gals in this stunt plane thing.  Do you give Granpa the credit?   Really it tells that you listen and do.   The plane looks gorgeous.   You have way more talent then I do.   H^^

Thanks DOC,

Grandpa has taught me just about everything in terms of building planes, but when it comes to engine runs, I've started coaching him on getting a "better" motor run and helping him trim the plane out a little better based on all the stuff I've read on the forums and stuff I've heard from guys like Banjock, Windy, Buddy Weider who I see at contests a lot.

Thanks Guys!

If all goes as planned, it might fly this Sunday, and if the weather holds up.  I mowed the circle today, which took over an hour and a half because of all the grass that there was, and I'm still not done!  I'll have to finish it tomorrow I guess.

I wish I had a circle in my yard to mow.

I think everybody does  :P  The grass was about 4 inches tall at the circle, and I had to mow it twice to get down to a good level, and I still have HUGE clumps of grass (like a foot tall) in the circle, so tomorow when I get home, I'm going to go and move all that grass away from the circle and mow it again to get it to the good golf course height I keep it at for flying.

Golf course height?

You slacker - If I had a field - it would be a billard table height.+ Smoothness.

You have your own field and you cant get more than 28 flights between now a july 4? God If I had my own field - Id install flood lights and fly all day into the night. - could get 50 flights in!

SOOO jealous..  ''

Howard,

Even if you did, your neighbors would gripe to the city council and they'd say they don't care if you're under the noise ordinance, you still have to cease and desist. Someone complained and that's all it takes. (boy am I getting sour about neighbors).

I have neighbors on both sides of me, so I don't want to fly so much that it becomes of annoyance to them.  So we typically (note I said typically because of this terrible weather we've been having until this week) will fly about 4 times a week, and about 4 or 5 flights each.  My last day of school is today and tomorrow starts exams.

BTW, the clear is going on the plane tomorrow!!!!

If you poke around on the Ringmaster site they have a method of setting the lawnmower up to mow a circle by itself, but it has to be a self propelled one(nuts). No buds from school to come over and help?  LL~-----LOUIE  D>K  H^^

Thanks Alan,

Chris,

For us, it's either the NATS or Brodak's.  We figured that we should make the trek out to Muncie because I personally am flying pretty darn well (IMO), I have my license, it's the 85th (?) anniversary and grandpa hasn't been there for 15 years.

I'm going to miss Brodak's, but I've been dieing to go to Muncie for about 3 years now!

Your clear came out better than mine. I'm have to sand out some orange peel (just a little) and some overspray (sigh). About a 1/4 done rubbing mine. Hope to have final assembly on Sunday.

Thanks Randy,

we sprayed the urethane at a very low pressure and it did come out very nice!  I'm not going to rub mine since we leave for the NATS in 28 days.  We are beginning final assembly today, and hopefully I could get at least a ground run on Sunday!

We noticed that when we sprayed this, it took a little more than one gun load to put two coats of clear on, and with dope it would take about 3 or maybe 4 gun loads for the same amount of clear, and much less shine.

When I shot mine, I put a light dust coat on it, let it dry for about 15 minutes (this based on the recommendations of the manufacturer), then shot one, medium coat. Where I had my minor problem was I shot the main airframe first then shot the parts. Unfortunately, I shot the parts (holding them by the jigs) and was sort of shooting them at the main airframe. Didn't think the spray would carry that far, but I ended up with some overspray on the main airframe. Not a big deal as it sands out easily, but it was still silly. Oh well, it will be fine when when I'm done.

We sprayed the clear with all the components on it, just left a space in between them.

Thanks Bob!!

Grandpa does like the plane a lot and how it came out!!!!

And I weighed it again tonight, and I must've made the wrong measurement for the weight somehow last time.  It now weighs 64 ounces minus a few odds and ends, so it'll probably be around 65, which is much much better than I thought it would be!  We'll finish assembling it tomorrow, bench trim it, take plenty of pictures, and bench run it!  Should be fun!

PS.  We also got to fly today after about 2 months of rain, it's finally cleared away and the lake is going back down and the sun is out!  I got 4 flights today, 2 on the Oriental Plus because we needed to move the tank, and 2 on the Ares trying to get the handle set right.  Now it's off to practice as much as possible for Muncie!
