Useful tools when building
« on: May 27, 2011, 01:39:14 PM »
I have had a few inquiries about some the tools I use when I build.
These are the items I use during every building project and they can be found at your
local Home Depot;

Below are the website links and cost for each item from Home Depot.

small red triangle shaped levels    $3.47 /EA-Each
large 48" & 60" straight edge rulers  (48" = $7.97 /EA-Each  |  60" = $9.96 /EA-Each)

and if you're not using a floating type wing jig and need long rods, H.D. has the 1/4" x 72" steel rods
that I have used in the past with some kits for jig building your wings.    $5.29 /EA-Each
and I believe you can get the 3/8" rods there also but may need to order them if not instock.

What do you use the small red triangle shaped levels for.

They can be used for making sure the mounts, wingtips & stab are level or when you dont want
to use or have an incidence meter for a quick reference to check that the flaps and elev's are even (neutral)

If the flaps and elevators were perfectly flat, I can see that an accurate reading, within.010 (the tolerance on the level), could be obtained.  How do you accommodate flaps and/or elevators that are sanded to a taper from hinge line to trailing edge?

Yes, I discovered those little levels some time ago...Buy bunches of them. Use them on your fuselage to measue fuse sides level, Motor mounts level. fuse sides vertical at the mounts, fuse sides vertical at the tail section, tail planes level/vertical
, etc.

Great tool, cheep!

I like weights.  Pieces of steel.  Or perhaps iron.

I do everything with one hand, and so jigs and clamps and weights come in handy (no pun).  Henry Werner and I cut up a bunch of half inch square material (two inches length, I think) that worked out great.  Also a couple of 4/1/6 pieces in case a tornado ever rips thru whilst I are shaping a wingtip with my handy dandy Wilkro razor plane.  He had this neato torpedo band saw that went on automatic.

I think the movers wondered what the heck was in the box.  Ah, screw 'em.  They denied stepping on the tail of my latest machine.  There's a special place in Hell for 'em.  I paid 'em with 900+ dollar bills and a big bag of quarters.  And four pennies.

Maggots.
