Evolution 61 NXCL
« on: January 20, 2011, 03:01:32 PM »
I got off the phone with Horizon Hobbies and they informed me that the new Evolution 61 is in. as you might know this has a conventional nva and venturi set up, tongue muffler , et.al. For about $140.00 and free shipping it is worth my time and money to buy one to have a look at it. Actually I bought it after listening to it on the vidio they have on the engines sale page.

Please let us know what you think. One of my flying buddies just purchased a Legacy ARF, and this is his first stunter in this class.Allen: How well do you think it(EV .61) would work for him on the Legacy? He's shopping around right now. He was thinking an LA.46 would fly it. I don't think so.Thinking ST.51 at minimum. This new motor looks nice. And the price is right. Can't wait to hear your reports!

Ive seen one in action and it hauls the mail quite well. It also ran quite strong in a fairly stiff breeze in Detroit.

How about weight?  Can you give us the weight without the prop nut and washer on the front.  That is usually off and the spinner parts replace it, so a good parity is to weigh all engines without those components.  Thanks.

Pat,
Can't give you that as i don't have the engine yet. However the bare weight published is 12.7 oz. Miniscule drop without the washer and nut I'd say.

A buddy of mine has a Legacy powered by a stock ST-51 which pulls the plane remarkably well.

I believe the Evolution 61 NXCL would a very fine match for the Legacy.  I am reviewing the T-Rex and desired a Sport Scale model to boot.  Willing to take the hit in scale, but happy to support the event.

I have them in stock they sell for 139.95 and should be great for the SV-11  or any other 60 sized  planes

I  got my example of the EVO .61NXL last week.. Nice looking engine with two mufflers and an extra venturi. but I can't honestly say I like the styling of it. I have read the instruction booklet through several times, and can't find any info on break in. But there is a warning about licking the engine or putting any portion of your airplane in your mouth! y1 LL~
We've been over the issues with the EVO .36 and I hope to not have the same issues with this engine. I intend to see if it will drop in place where a ST.51 fits and test fly it that way. It may weigh a decent weight, but I can't help but wonder how much lighter it would be if it didn't have all those crooked fins all over the place. It will be interesting to see how the engine performs compared to the ST.51 and the venerable ST.60.
With all this ice and snow, it seems like it will be a long time before I can get out to fly again!  HB~>!

Dan, I have a NIB EVO 36 that has no break-in instructions either.  As I recall, the 36 sold with the ARF PT19 package was supposed to be a trainer ready to go with no special break-in.  The needle valve on the 36 is pre-set with very little adjustment.

On the other hand, the engine would probably respond to a typical break-in for an ABC piston and sleeve.

Just don't try and break it in like a Fox. That is unless you don't care about a bad rod or crankpin ar premature wear in general.. That includes abc and abn.

From my experience there is no break in on the new age engines we have today.  Run them at a fairly rich two cycle.  They don't have the metallurgy the old Fox's have. H^^

FWIW.. I have been running-in the development engines on the bench with an 11x5 at a clean lightly breaking four with the muffler in place. I usually don't use the muffler gasket. I put 8 oz through them and then into the plane. I have flown it with 12x6 Zinger, 13x5 Powerpoint, and Bob McDonald 13.25x4.25. I get 6:10 - 6:40 on 6 oz. of 10% Omega. I have been using the stock plug and head clearance and the large vent. The smaller vent will slow the motor down a bit and work on suction though I alway use MP.

I think Dave also posted somewhere else that the engine mount pattern is the same as the OS40-46SF.  8)

Yes it is. The distance to the rear is a little longer so if you have an OS that is pushed all the way back it'll be tight. The front washer will also be in a different spot.
