Reason to build a certain plane??
« on: December 18, 2006, 02:03:06 PM »
I know we all have various reasons that we decide to build certain planes.   I am going to finish up a Circus King over the Holidays.  I got the plans from Barry Baxter (real nice plans!) and it was PDQ's answer to the Sterling Ringmaster.

Why??  Because I really, really, wanted one when I was a kid!  No other reason...........  I'll paint it like the old AHC ad and power it with a McCoy Red Head 35.

The other one I really, really, want to build is the Bunting Bros. Baka Bomb profile!  Got those plans from Richard in a swap.....

It's sort of like a "break".  Not a "knock out finish competition plane just something that will do the pattern and burn holes in the sky!  %^ **)

Anything like that for you???

Here ya go Bill: To your Question, Yes I want to build my Sterling Fokker DVII but I'm sure the kit wood weights a ton. I need to clone the kit if I ever have enough free time to devote soley to that project. I built two about 30 years ago but my building skills were terrible. Now I know I can do alot better.

One of these days, I want to build a Novi III. Complicated construction, but I really like it. I've had the plans since I was in high school. I'm building a Novi I now that will allow me to sort of warm up to it.  :)

At my age I figure I'd best get to building one of every model I ever thought seriously about buildig and flying.

I got brung up on 1/2A models. I haven't flown one  for a few years but I keep building the darn things. I'm sure it's because of how much I enjoyed them as a kid.

The first time I ever saw a genuine stunt ship up close, I knew that I was going to have to learn to do that before I went to the grave. I mean....man...I mean....man......you know what I mean.

So I pick particular planes to build for two reasons. I want to. I love to. I'm gonna. Plus they say you can't take it with you but I'm sure that what we choose to learn will. This life and the next I'm gonna build model airplanes.By then I'll probably get really good at it. ;D

Here is my reasons for building a particular airplane.  First is I like competition, so I try to build a plane so I can look like a fool in the center of the circle.  Second I just like to build, but, have run out of room.  Most of all like has been stated, it is a design that I have always wanted and could not afford when I was a youngster.  Right now working on 7 mouse racers and the P-39 I got from Walter.   Later,  DOC Holliday

Did you ever see a PDQ Mustang?
Had fixed flaps(profile).
Never saw one before or after. flew pretty good with a Torp.29.
Course, anything that flew in 1953 was a good flyer for me.
If I built one, it would be for nostalgic or sentimental reasons.
To be competitive I feel the field of picks might be narrowed somewhat.
Course some folks have a way of changing moments and landing gear locations
and these planes suddenly become great performers.Few are ever questioned
especially if the,re "name" fliers.
Then there are some that I honestly believe can make almost anything fly,or fly most anything. These people really impress me(gross understatement) and  sometimes don,t get the recognition the have worked so hard for and richly deserve.

Kinda go with the flow so to speak.. Our club decided to hold a contest using the Mirror Meet pattern.. I didn't feel a stunt ship would be quite up to the task so I built two profile modifications to an old slow combat ship and put together an ARF Super Clown to practice with.

One day it was raining and the wind was blowing so I decided to build a Ringmaster.. My first real Stunt ship was a Skylark so I built a Skylark for Classic. Guess I'm just like everyone else.....

I have a Custom Models Buccaneer 746 right here and it will be my next plane, because it has a foam wing and I've never built a foam wing plane.  In fact, I even have an extra set of cores in case I mess up!  I'm hoping to not mess up though; in fact I'll cut a new kit from the original pieces and with good luck I'll build two Buccaneers.  As of now, I have an ST 51 for one and an ST 56 for the other.  Hope those will do.

Hi Roger,

My son, Aaron's, first NATS plane ('96) used the Buccaneer 746 wing!  We got the wing, accidently, in a 740 kit that one of us won at a meet.  I wanted to buy a 740 wing from Bill who made them, but he woulodn't let me!  He said it was his mistake and sent a new set of 740 cores and wouldn't even let me send the 746 cores back to him!  A great guy..........

Aaron built his Vector II using those cores and Randy's Vector plans.  Even did the tips like the Vectra Dreadnaught.  He started with the OS 40VF piped and moved to the PA 40 later.  It is still very flyable but has a touch of hanger rash.  He's retired it but hasn't clipped the lead outs!  **)

It is a great flying plane, very "user friendly".  y1

Oh yeah, the 740 also got built.  ;D
