T Square

I built a few T Squares when I was a teenager. Boy that kit was inexpensive. $3 - $4 if I remember right, and very simple to build. A little Ambroid, 1/2 sheet of silkspan, 3 - 4 coats of clear dope and you were in the air. Powered them with whatever I had handy. I never flew any combat but the plane was a blast to fly. I even had one that I cobbled a tricycle landing gear so I could launch from a stooge.. I think Sterling was the mfgr. Is the T square an exstinct species or do they still ply  (no pun intended) the skies?

I crashed mine so much that I sawed motor mounts out of aluminum.  Just unbolt them, pound them straight, and put back on.  Mine was McCoy powered, with a music wire gear bolted under the motor mounts.  Plans can be had.  http://www.controllineplans.com/frameset2.htm  Go to page 4 and scroll down.

I had some McCoy engines, so I bet one of my T Squares had one on it.. Speaking of aluminum mounts. I begged an aluminum pot from my Mom and cut it up into pieces for landing gear, motor mounts, etc..  When you're a kid, anything cheap can be made to work..

Guys, this is really nostalgic!  I learned to fly inverted on a T square!  And with a McCoy redhead 35 at that.  I loved the F9F so much that at that time I put a high rudder with the stab/rudder on it and a month later the Whatzit came out in the magazine!  Boy did I feel smart.  (Not.)
