Flew my first full size stunter at Sembach AB Germany in 1956. It was a Veco TomTom built in the barracks on the uneven top of my foot locker, and powered with a Fox 35. Some of the guys I flew with were Bill Dahlgren from Glenview IL, Wayne Melton from Fontana CA, Ted Kwas now from Burke Burnett TX, Richy Richard also from Burke Burnett, and the late James Mazzo from Denver CO.
Wayne and Bill D. were very good fliers, and probably the only two of our group who left Sembach with their airplanes still in one piece! Wayne flew a Fox powered Barnstormer, and Bill flew an OS powered Half Fast, which was the first OS engine I ever saw.
Ted and Richy were flying Webra diesel powered combat models, and I loved the different sound of those fine little engines.
Wayne returned to Fontana, and was flying a Veco Chief the last time I visited him there. He is now retired in Arkansas.
James and I returned to Denver CO as tech instructors, where I continued to fly C/L with another group of fellows. Harold Fryer was my Denver flying partner until he left the AF, and we lost contact.
Still keep in touch with the rest of the guys, though I haven't visited with either Bill D. or Richy since they left Sembach AB.
Yes, I miss those days.
