Swap meet Finds
« on: March 12, 2011, 10:03:12 AM »
Went to a swap meet today in south central Indiana. I bought a low use OS 60 FP for a future RC build. The seller threw in an old C/L racer that had a K&B 35(torpedo) on it. The airframe needs some outboard wing repair, possible strip the finsh and recover(ultracote?).The engine needs cleaned up but seems to have good compression. But the real find was the ALMOST new Enya 40SS for less than $40 !!! Looks like the Brodak Sea Hurricane I'm building just got an upgrade. My only question isdoes Aeroproducts carry a venturi and NVA ?
Oh, almost forgot the K&B will probably end up on a Voodoo or Nemesis once they are built. Will post pictures of the racer once it is cleaned up. Would like to know what it might be and the time frame it was flown. It has a mechanical fuel shutoff.

All of Randy's venturis are custom made. You may need to send him the engine to get a good fit. He has all kinds of great NVA's. Call and talk to him. BTW, you found the right guy (IMHO)!

I've bought 6 engines in the past 3 years at this same swap meet. Today I saw a C/L handle that was very interesting. Cast metal, and the line holders would pivot 180 degrees. First time for that!

And yes swap meet are fun!!

Went to Lebanon flea market today and got an Enya 30 in excellent condition. Cost $15.00. Flea markets are the elusive chase for the deal of a lifetime.

I think the market for IC engines will get only better as the Rc crowd converts to electric power.

Randi sells Enya engines and has the new derlin venturis that are stock on all new engines. These are very good fits and priced right. He also sells stock Enya needle valves and you can upgrade to an Aero Products NVA for just a little more money.A very nice, worthwhile upgrade i might add.

Also went to the Lebanon Show in P.A.  We set up and sold some stuff, Had 7 tables of goodies. Soon as we walked in the door and got to our tables I sold 3 Berkeley Kits. Place was packed this year and people was buying. Also sold a nice Supertigre 60 and a bunch of other engines and some control line kits.
Phila Flyers were there and we went out to dinner with them after the show.
Had a great time!!  Also got to see Dan Banjocks new Galloping Comedian, BEAUTIFUL

I haven't been to any swap meets, but did "win" two ST .56's for $25 and $28 in the last week.  The first one seems really nice with great compression and I'm still waiting on the second one.  I can't wait to bench run this dude!! #^ it may make me quit wasting money on Fox and Mccoy .35's  LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

Bought a $4 Tower 40 at Lebanon on Saturday. Engine stuck solid, looked creepy crawly, the carb held on with a single screw, sort of. The fellow selling kept saying you don't have to buy it, don't buy it. The price at that point was $5. Figuring the back plate was worth $6 or so, to use as a cover plate for an LA46, I offered him $4. With evident disgust he handed over the mossy looking (some aluminum discoloration etc.) lump. Saturday night, air tool oil and a heat gun freed up the beaut. Compression felt good. Popping the top and back place, more discoloration on crank and inside of case, no damage far as I could tell, the bore clean and shiny. Stuck a .265 (small FP40) Lee venturi into the spigot, an OS needlevalve, new thunderbolt plug. On Sunday at the field the engine needled nicely and evenly, saw 13,000 for a whisker on the tack, turning an APC 10.5x4.5. with %5. Felt user friendly. Good vibes. Transitioned smoothly from sloppy rich to lean. Dan Banjok using his best guru/oracular tone, said, not bad, go fly. I will put this engine on a sport plane next week. Might play with head gaskets, could be tunable for stunt. Ugh. That makes 10 Tower 40s (plus 13 FP40s or FP35s)... I thought I'd overcome my obsession... MY ADDICTION!

Picked up a NIB OS 40 FP-S for $20. Also a like new Miller R/C 1/2-A starter, Hotshot glow driver, and charger, all for $5!

The new Miller starters sell for over $50 plus shipping!

The OS FP-S is the steel piston version that I wanted, because my other 40 FP engines are all ABN.

I quit going to local swap and sell meets the last couple of years.  Seems most got to know who I was and I would watch them grab and engine.  One guy with me picked it up and said why the price change.  He wanted me to look at it and tell him if it was worth the money or not.  Used to get Fox .35 stunts for 5 to 15 dollars.  Got a McCoy .60 Redhead for 5 dollars.  Has the early version of Bill Johnson pressure set up for throttle.  Here in Tuscon haven't checked the sellers tables yet.    Am getting a case of fuel to take home.

I have only been to one swap meet, just don't have then around here anymore.........

But I did buy 6 engines at $5 a piece during the one foray.  All ended up being good runners!  One was an extremely low run time Veco/Allyn .35.  Had to actually run it on the bench for abut an hour to loosen it up good.  It is the type Allyn built before Veco did "their own".  "Wrong side exhaust stack" like a Green Head K&B.  The other 4 (2 Fox .35 Stunts and 2 McCoy Red Head .35s) were given to people who needed an engine over the years.  Oh, yeah, I did also keep the "gold" (30th anniversary??) Fox .35 Stunt.  I figured the bunch of 6 were worth $30......

Went to another swap meet today, Converse Indiana. Haggled with the owner of a Ringmaster/Fox 35 combo, couldn't come to terms. Saw a lot of Fox 29s, Mccoys, even a couple of incomplete ignition engines. I spent my allowance on a Flite Streak? with a Fox 35, and a OS 40 Fp. Both engines are in good condition, very clean.
Now I need to get building , besides my Sea Hurricane to finish I have several Corehouse Pyschos, Super Satan, Wooten Demon. That list got longer the other day with H. Rush's care package, Voodoo ribs and paper templates of the Nemesis II ribs and tips.

Swap meets are great and i am very appreciative to anyone who sells their slightly used or new treasures for a great price to someone they believe will use them and not try to sell them for a profit. At my last swap meet i bought a brand new in the box "Sky Baby" 1/2a for $40 , the one before that i got a brand new in the box .15 fp for $35.   #^

The last 2 planes i got( one bought one gifted) were being sold by a club member for the deceased owners sister. Funny thing is he was at both swap meets in opposite parts of the state. He said there is one more plane, a small full fuselage with a Fox.29. He was pretty busy, didn't get his name, I guess I' ll look for him next year.
