Title: Survey.. Mirror Finished Polished Spinners
Post by: RandySmith on November 06, 2009, 09:41:53 AM
I would be interested to see if these are wanted by flyers, I can have my cnc spinners polished to a mirror finish.
They look as shiney as a car bumper when put through the process.

Regards

Yes!!!  Everyone pretty much has to do it on their own now.  I chuck them in a drill press on low and pull them up with emery cloth then semi chrome.  But it isnt that safe and I hate doing it.

Or I have hand rubbed them for hours with mother wheel polish.

But as of late to get around it I have just gone to painting them to match the plane.

Yes it would be a nice option.

YES!!  I have been trying to get my olde Froom spinners to shine using Brasso. What a pain.  BUT won't shiny spinners blind the judges?  No,wait most of them are blind D>K LL~ LL~ LL~

Boy, there went YOUR scores for about the next year or so...

1. Great idea Randy. .... If Randy offers these polished spinners BUY them, don't bother trying to do it yourself if they are available to buy in a shinny state.

It is a messy, time consuming job, but it can be done if needed.

2. If you want to make a spinner that you ALREADY own, or a landing gear, real shinny then here is the best way to do it:

        http://www.tru-turn.com/faq-29.htm

It is not the polishing that does it, it is the SANDING that gets the job done. Look at your spinner or LG with a magnifying glass and you will see how rough it really is. This has to be taken care of waaaay before polishing takes place. Polish alone will NEVER take down the rough mountains in the finish, it needs sandpaper. I have done three of my 5" spinners and 3 pair of LG and they all have come out looking almost like chrome.

If you do this, try these:  1. buy lot's of latex gloves and use them on both hands all the time during the process. If you don't do this you will wish you had! Please don't ask me how I know this. HB~>   2. work over a kitchen size garbage container WITH a liner in it, have a little water in a plastic container for the wet sanding part.  3. have a large roll of paper towels at your side. 4. wear OLD clothes, it's messy! and ..... BE PATIENT!

It is not hard to do, just messy and time consuming. I would NEVER do it if I could pay for it to be done. I would have gladly added another $50 to the cost of my $180 spinner to have it come already looking like chrome!!!! The LG is a little easier, and well worth the effort but still I would pay to have it done, it is not a "fun" job.  n~

BUY IT FROM RANDY ALREADY SHINNY, IT WILL BE WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

Randy, I hope you do offer us shinny spinners. If you make a light version for electric please put me down for a 2 1/4 shinny one! TIA :-)

Would buying prepolished spinners affect the BOM, seeing it's part of the finish?

No effect on the BOM, it's part of the power system.   ;)

As the Good Lord as my witness, I will be getting some soon....and as a side note, I was one of the lucky ones who
made it back to the world alive & whole after 'Nam - my prayers go out to the families of those that didn't make it back alive & I give special THANKS to all the brave men and women who gave their ALL to keep this great country
of ours FREE on this VETERANS DAY 2009.
