Title: Super Staris Build
Post by: Steve Fitton on August 18, 2015, 01:25:35 PM
Started a new plane this week.  Randy Smith Super Staris, planning on PA-75 for power.  As you can see, sheeted foam wing construction.

Steve. Does the granite table top have the top fuse carved into the surface. If so that's Pro Stunt.

Actually Jose its the bottom of a mold some guy gave me.  With the mold I can make molded balsa fuselages for Super Staris planes like hotcakes!!!

What Epoxy do you use?

Eeyore looks very interested...  Don't let that smile fool you he is making sure you comply to the BOM every step of the way!

Z poxy finishing resin.  I don't have any other true slow cure stuff around, and the z poxy cards out into a micro fine layer.  The glued surface gets a coat of nitrate first to seal it

Added and shaped leading and trailing edges.  Finished sheeted cores weigh the same as all my others, 4.5 oz each.

That is awesome Steve!!!! That weight is better than a lot I have seen, and in all probability close to ideal for such a big plane. Good job!

I tend to build in radical spurts... it's been a while since I made much progress, but after the electrician finishes up tomorrow and I can run my shop A/C, I think I will feel a radical spurt coming on.  ;)

Just a tip Steve. On your next build if you sand the inside of the tips and all blocks smooth they are lighter and stronger. I always try to make the inside look as good as the outside. That's just a personal preference. Looking good is it done yet?

How do you keep the paper from catching an edge or corner of the paper when sanding in something like a tip or top block?

For inside the tip I CA sand paper to my finger. For outside blending run some masking tape over the wing and sand the outside of the tip to it.

Slacked off for a few days....  here the Morris basswood horn boxed are being glued on and then sanded to match the flaps.

More done on wing details.  The root end of the flaps was glassed with 0.5 oz cloth, the inboard fixed tab was made, shaped and installed, and the outboard movable roll tab was made, hinged and the adjustment hardware assembled from Morris components.  I will sand the hard point for the wire flush with the wing and then start detail sanding the wing and surfaces in preparation for getting some nitrate on them.

Been busy with the mostly mundane process of covering the wing and flaps.  I used some old K&S SGM silkspan which works pretty well.  3 coats of nitrate over the silkspan and the wing is ready for installation now.  Still working on the stabilizer/elevators.  Just epoxied in the horn boxes this afternoon.

The tail assembly ready for nitrate, as you see it here it is 2.9 oz.  The tail for Dreadnought #2 was 3.0oz, the Rapier 3.0 oz, so they build pretty consistent.

Hi Steve
its a little late, but what I do, is to slightly bevel the insides of the metal pads, this puts the bolt closer to dead center of the wood beams and makes the fuse slightly tighter and the crutch, many others do the same, I had many people do that when they swapped the 65 out for a 75, which is just a tiny bit wider.
Your build is looking great !  Keep up the great work

Randy

Got delayed by the KOI trip and then the blizzard resulting in the kids off of school for a week :(

Joined the fuselage sides today.  Before this step, I did something different: I carefully fit each side to the wing.  Usually I sand and dremel the cutouts to the exact fit right when I install the wing later in the construction.  Not sure if this helps or not, but I will see if it makes a difference later in the construction.

As long as you had them taped tightly together as a pair when you slid them on the wing and did the fitting, great idea! I'll steal that one!

I had the removable aluminum gear on one plane in which I could relocate it by unbolting and moving it.  I fly off grass so I need gear a little further forward.    Just an option before you close it up.   On wing mounted gear I had two sets,  one for grass plus one for pavement with wheel pants.

That is all taken care of on my designs, the setup is so you can spin the gear around for grass or concrete, when you spin the gear around it moves the wheels back n forth nearly an inch. If you fly very nose or tail heavy you may need to adjust the gear location

Reason number one is I don't know how....

Reason #2 is that I'm not sure its worth learning for such low rate production.  Once I have a couple of planes I am happy with, I plan to build other stuff, like new planes for Classic or Nostalgia 30.

You need to come up and have a shop session with me sometime.  Topic: balsa molding.  In about the same time you carve and hollow that top block, you could make a blue foam mold shape and then mold a top block of two laminated sheets of 1/16th balsa.   ;D

Steve that big cutout for the flap horn is not needed. A slot cut straight back from the trailing edge will allow the horn arms to clear the body. And then the fillet will cover it.

I must be missing something here.  The big cutout is for the bellcrank to flap pushrod, then the little cuts for the horn arms.  The pushrod and horn upright have the lowest profile when the horn is in the flaps "up" position.

Yes, but it doesn't have to stay in that position all the way in. Flaps horn level, slide in the outboard leg of the horn past the inboard fusecside, move to full down, slide in the pushrod, move to neutral and slide the outboard leg past the outboard fuse side. Then the fillets cover that slot.

That is the way I do mine, and the small filler piece is covered by the fillets , the larger piece is glued back in and a little model magic filler,
but Steve  will have no problems covering the small and larger cutouts, just glue them back in and put a little filler over the lines

You know, That's how I did it all the other times now that I think about it.  No idea why I didn't rotate the horn legs down this time.  I must be getting old.

A few more pictures of Staris work.  I take pictures of the completed horn/pushrod assemblies if for no other reason than to be able to convince myself I did not forget anything critical during assembly.  Often the construction pictures help me remember what the heck I did when I forget on the next build...

Working on the bottom blocks.  They will be cut out to allow the pipe to drop in and out.  Getting a vector style canopy to work is challenging.  It looks like the pilot will need surgery to fit.

Drop the pilot floor down about 1/4". it will give you more clearance.

The pilot got a body ectomy.  This saves on his Obamacare premium as well.

Well heck, you could have just used Marie Antoinette for a pilot then...

Shaped the vertical fin and rudder from 3/8th sheet and sanded down accordingly.  The completed fin weighs 10 grams.  I need to remember to trace it out on some silkspan to make covering it easier before its glued on.  Cut the groove for the canopy out and dry fit the canopy.

Getting closer now.  The basic airframe is assembled.  The cowl and the nose are fibreglassed.  Right now the fuselage is getting nitrate dope.

Steve:

What did you use to apply the glass cloth?  Epoxy, dope, CA?

What is your process (do you apply a particular primer to the glassed area before color dope)?

Thanks!

Hey Scott!

The glass goes on with z poxy finishing resin thinned not quite 50/50 with methanol.  After it cures I sand the glassed area with 220, 320 and 400 and then it gets two coats nitrate, then silkspan doped over it just like the wood.
