Title: Super Combat Streak and Veco 19
Post by: Russell Shaffer on March 03, 2016, 08:54:24 PM
I'm thinking I want to build a Super Combat Streak and I have acquired a very nice Veco 19.  Will the Veco fly this OK, and if so, what kind of fuel mileage can I expect?  There isn't much tank room if I build it to the plan specs.  I can do some things to the inside of the nose area to make more room if necessary.  Thanks for input.

Russell I like the old Combat Streak.  It flies well.  If you keep it real light the Veco 19 will fly it acceptably.  It may not like the wind very well though as the 19 is at its limit to pull the airplane.  I'm a proponent of using the higher end of the engine/ power package suggested for any given airplane to allow plenty of reserve for wind and if the airframe weight gets away from you.  Also minimal power usually means the airplane will slow way down in maneuvers which negatively affects the shape and timing,  making it harder to do correctly.  Line tension will also suffer.  If I had a choice I'd go for more power and then restrict it with low pitch props and Venturi restriction if you want to.  I've thought to build another like the one I had as a teen.  It had a Torp green head .35 in it and I would likely use the same in a new one.  (At least a .35 of some kind)

If your VECO 19 is the ball bearing version, you will have a great combo.  The VECO 19BB can power a Banshee capable of winning contest.  3oz will give you at least 5min.  Use 9-4 or 10-4 apc prop at 11K plus rpm.

Absolutely. The Veco 19bb will have plenty of power for a Combat Streak. Are you going to build from plans, an old TF kit, or Walter Umlands' kit?

"There are...

Pepsi People and Coke People.

Chevy People and Ford People.

Mac people and PC People.

Ringmaster People and Flight Streak People."

Hey Russell,  I think you'll really enjoy a Combat Streak,
The one's I have/had were powered with different .19's, .35's
and even a LA.46.
What everyone is saying makes sense to me. Keep it light!

All Flight Streaks have a tank space problem. The nose is
just too short. Using a .19 means carrying less fuel and it
needs a smaller tank.

There's nothing difficult about building this plane. Most of us
could cut out a "kit" without too much trouble, but I would
make a few changes.

The Combat Streak kit had the usual Streak wing with the solid
leading edge, which was good for rough work but WAY heavy.
I'd go with a 3/8 square at 45 degrees L.E. like the ARFs have.
I'd also use 1/16" top and bottom trailing edge.

Combat Streaks can use one wheel or two. Both are OK.
The kits came with wire for two.

The plane in the picture has a 1/4" fuselage top and bottom.
This looks better than the standard 1/8" sheet but requires light
wood.

I also have a badly finished original from a 1960's Top Flight kit.
It's a bit gruesome, but that's OK. I didn't build it.
It's fabric covered and doped and is complete except for
the wheels , engine, fuel line and wheel collars.
It's weighs 20.3 oz. That's not bad and a .19 would fly it.

The standard mistake people make with profile Streaks is not
understanding that the canopy is there to carry engine
vibrations back to the wing and also to strengthen the nose.
The ARF's completely missed this important feature.
I don't think the Combat Streak has the same issue, but
Mr. Aldrich knew what he was doing, so my Streaks have
hollowed out balsa canopies.

The kit lead out position has always worked OK for me.
I'm not sure if it needs to be adjustable.

Russel, if you're really stuck for plans, I could send you
some basic measurements and photos to work from.

Cheers! - K

... Or go to the local office store and have a poster made.  Problem is the paper is 34x48 and most stores can only print 24 wide on site.

These are the Top Flite plans.

I am considering rebuilding a busted profile fuselage this way... The wing is mostly good.

Thanks guys.  I have the plans from Outerzone and my profile Streaks use a 1/2 square LE and 1/16 TE.

Hey guys, Staples can print plans to the large size like the plans that Hutch and Tom put on discs.

Most of the office places and blue print places use 36" wide or 48" wide rolls with virtually unlimited length

The problem I run int to at MY local sources is an unwillingness to scale to the exact proportions I need

Recently Howard Rush sent me a CAD drawing in PDF that would not scale properly for me to do a simple Tile / poster print and the Staples gal was a dead head

I found this guy who sent three perfect sized copies to me rolled tube for $28.60 shipped

Dennis Keegan [plansplotter@yahoo.com]

no web site...RC groups contact... I sent PDF....he quoted price.... I got exactly what I needed

Fred I've had good luck numerous times with this at Fed Ex/Kinkos.  They will usually run several trial copies till we get it right.  Sometimes have to scale off a known object on the drawing like a given wheel or spinner size.

I've had really good luck with the people at my Office Depot, other than their printer is only 24 inches wide.  They have messed with me by printing on legal or some other paper type KNOWING what I want already.  I just grab a ruler off the shelf and check wing span or rib spacing or some other easy to verify relatively long dimension. (If they haven't already started measuring)

I've had two different young men at different times at Staples that checked the plans to make sure they were correct.  Seems there is something on the plans to measure.  In fact there where several items on the plans.  I also have them make extra copies for me so I can make templates.  Very reasonable prices compared to FedEx where I used to go.
