Super '52
« on: January 20, 2014, 07:55:41 AM »
I was talking with a few guys this weekend at KOI (Great contest, BTW) and the idea that the OTS pattern is perceived by many as "easier" to fly than the current CLPA pattern.
How about this?  A Super '52 class....ANY plane eligible...flying the OTS pattern?
Maybe a 5 point bonus for an OTS eligible plane?

Have fun!

I sort of disagree.  The OTS horizontal 8s are harder to fly, because the airplane is diving ranther than climbing at the intersections.  Also the square loop, at least a quarter lap long, is harder to fly, because it has no rhythm like  modern squares. Other than that it is probably easier to fly, but still difficult to fly really well.

I think we already have plenty of PA events, and, with our diminishing biomass, there is a challenge to provide judges, etc. for what we have.

We already have beginner and the beginner pattern.

It is intersting to note that most of the Old Time pattern is made up of round maneuvers of which many of the larger unflapped old time planes will fly easier than flapped planes. At least for me.

Thanks Jim T., had to sit here and run the 8's through this feeble brain to see what you meant.   And it is hard to get that vertical at the intersection. H^^

Guys,
The idea behind the "Super 52" is to have a second event for those that would like to fly more than one event at a contest but find that keeping two patterns straight is nerve racking. The 52 pattern is simpler physically to fly as there are only two laps inverted and you get back to level flight before the next maneuver. It would open to any ship of any design using the 1952 pattern without flap or engine bonus. I think it is worth trying.

An even simpler idea, Clockwise pattern, fly the beginner pattern going clockwise.  If you ordinarily fly clockwise, then fly it counter clockwise. S?P

Guys,
This is not meant to take the place of OTS, it would be a second event using the 1952 pattern. Basically, fly what you have any design airplane, no restrictions. Most of our contests down in the southeast are two day events and the distance is a fairly good drive for most. If OTS is what you fly, some feel that a 4 hour drive for two flights may not be worth the effort. Having a second event that they could fly either the same ship or another ship maybe of their own design or a modified design (like an All American with equal panels or longer tail moment) that you like.

If you compare this to the modern pattern side there are now five events (PA, Classic, N30, Profile, 25) that could be run at any given event. If OTS is what you prefer you only have one and you have to use a ship for pre 1953. Having a second event for the 52 pattern might get a few more people to come out.  Worth a try.

Best,         DennisT
