Title: Sunny Saturday? There's Hope!
Post by: Tim Wescott on December 29, 2010, 01:03:10 PM
Wunderground says no rain this Saturday in Portland:

I hope so -- I'm getting a plane ready for Oregon Flying Fun No. 1 at Delta Park!

It's supposed to be a real good day Friday for us (for this time of the year) .  All the snow should be melted and the temps around the mid 50's! Oldest son has the day off, and we should be spinnin' in circles!  Saturday "might" bring rain..........

Just hope the "Z-pack" I started today kicks in in time! LOL!!

Well, if the weather dweebs are to be believed, it's going to be sunny here Saturday. But it will also be 34°. If I fly, I'll need to layer on the clothes and bring a lot of lighter fluid.

Be sure to tell the Portland Gang Howdy for me.

I hope Leo learns how to fly the right way this new year. Oh wait, you can't teach a old dawg new tricks! LL~

And the weather report just keeps getting better and better.

I went and put my AMA number on the wing of my Skyray just for this event -- it's that special.  And I'm replacing the old twice-warped (once on purpose and the other by the Moisture Gods) vertical stab as the first step in Brettizing the thing, with getting decent length lines for a second step.  All to make it down to D-park the day after tomorrow.

Oldest son gave me the call.  Looks like it's a go for flying Friday and possibly Saturday, too!  It will be good to get the handle back in the hand! LOL!!

Good luck at D-Park, Tim.

And the weather was nice.  It was just cloudy enough that the fact that I'd lost my sunglasses didn't matter and the breeze was steady out of the east, with never more than just enough wind so you knew where to place your maneuvers.  Yes, it was around 32 degrees which is cold for the Portland area, but the Fireballs put out a spread of hot eats (and we all provided plenty of hot air!).

(edit)

There were about a dozen folks there.  They all introduced themselves 'cause they're nice, but I have a brain like a sieve for names, so I've forgotten who they were -- except Richard, because he's in this thread.  We had folks flying the pattern, folks flying Clown racers, and folks just flying round and round for fun.

There were Clown racers, a really ragged old Ringmaster and various sport and stunt planes including not one but two Skyrays.  We had folks flying the Clown racers for speed, folks flying the pattern, and folks just flying.

Personally, I managed the whole beginners pattern for another two times in my life, doubling my cumulative score.

Of note was Richard's Clown racer which had (so he said) an engine that was chock full of little defects.  In spite of this, he was able to rework it so that it ran well -- but perhaps the fact that it was .18 displacement instead of .15 made the difference.  He seems to know what he's doing, so if he gets the bugs ironed out then no doubt it'll be faster yet -- when it's no longer a buggy engine*.

I can't even say it was a nice day of flying for January.  I was just a nice day of flying, period.

* OK, fine -- for the slow:  :)

Went out yesterday.  Z-Pack hasn't taken hold good enough, yet.  Couldn't fly, but had a great time helping Aaron trim out his "new plane".  First flights on a Vector ARF to be used for practice.  Looks like it will be a good one. Small case Magnum .36 is great power for it.

No flying today, threatening clouds and rain on the way.  There will be other opportunities soon!
