Summer Meet TOPCLASS

Well I loaded up the Ford with planes and equipment.  Sunday AM dogs and I are on the way.  Jim Lee and Ed Prohaska were there already.  Then Jim Piscetto and Melvin Schuette pulled in before the rest.   Beautiful day for flying.  My complaint was not enough wind.  Had to look for a spot opposite the judges and fly. 
First shot is Ed Prohaska with ARF Nobler. 
Second shot is Jim Lee of Lee's Machine Shop and CD,  do not know the other gentleman.
Third pic the kid Andrew Hathaway and his Dad Bob and the planes.
Fourth is Melvin Schuette of MBS Model Supply and Paul what his name.   Just can't remember names.
Fifth shot is Chris Edinger and friends.  Did not get their names either.  Guess I am getting old.

Thanks for the pictures, John.  I wish I could have attended, but work has me out of the country for the week.  I hope it wasn't too hot.  It's good to see Andrew made it out.  I hadn't seen any sign of him in a while.  Did Jim Kraft make it?

I've been flying, just haven't been competing.  It's hard to justify making the trip to contests unless I'm prepared, and lately I just haven't been prepared.  Last weekend, neither plane was working well for me.  I rebuilt the OS 35 in my Nobler on Friday night, got a few flights on it Saturday morning, and flew it Sunday.  The P-Force was running out of fuel after the hour glass up until about Friday too.  As it worked out both planes ran longer Sunday, almost to the point of over runs.  It turned out to be a really nice day, and we were on the way home by 2pm.  

We saw Jim Kraft at the field here in Salina earlier in the week.  He said he had a family commitment over the weekend, and wouldn't be able to make it to Topeka.

After the contest was finished, the Cub Scouts that judged the Freestyle event, were invited to try the TopClass club trainer...

Thanks for the pics Doc. Wish I could have been there, but I had two grandsons being baptized in Wichita sunday. I think this is the first of the Topeka classic/profile meets I have missed. Thanks for your pics too Andrew.

Freestyle event?

That sounds different. What sort of flying did people do in it? What did it take to impress the judges?

The Freestyle event was billed as Bi Slob Freestyle, but a pair of combat planes were flown along with 3 Bi Slobs.  The goal was to impress the Scouts.  I didn't catch the exact results, but it seemed they were more impressed with the combat planes than the Bi Slobs.  Maybe someone else who was there noted the official results?  They weren't marked when I took pics of the score boards.

... a combat plane can be pretty fast and they turn.

I was at an airshow this summer and one of the most breath taking flight was a tiny turbine powered R/C glider: it was fast and it could change direction faster than I could see Everybody loved it except the photographers.

Well Jim sat down to do his usual stunts/aerobatics/CL 3D stuff.   Melvin followed suit and I never thought a Bi-Slob could fly that long.  I went for smoothness and low inverted laps as well as the hanging.  What was fun was letting the plane climb to almost the top of the circle and then it would drop.   Just like a stall.   The combat guys did the high speed loops and eights.  Do not know what the criteria  was.  Jim got ugly plane award.   Melvin got the beauty award.   It was fun and I have ideas for the next time.

The freestyle was just that.....   Anything goes...    The judging was done by cub scout pack #112 from Overbrook, KS.  The criteria they were given was 1 = boring and 10 = Awesome!!   None  of hte scouts knew any of the pilots and most had never seen a model airplane fly...    There were five scouts on the judging panel and they used most of the scoring range!!
Great fun and I wil get the scores posted soon.

That's not a bad criteria for freestyle

Earlier this summer I went to watch a Fly In /Air Show and there was a Freestyle R/C contest there at the same time. Judges included qualified judges for full size aerobatics. The guys hovering, snapping and torque rolling their prop planes were good but the contest was won by ... a pro R/C flyer and shop owner flying a turbine powered glider. I am pretty sure the audience agreed.
